PLAYLISTS - New Iowa Music on Bandcamp 2

This is just another in our long series of playlists. And like the name says, this one features the latest music by Iowa artists that I could find on Bandcamp. It features a blend of experimental, metal, instrumental, and electronic music, with a punk tune as well!

Favorites of 2017 (and the State of the Website speech and boring statistics)

Well, we entered the fifth year of the Iowa Music Showcase. Unfortunately, we were gone for over half of the previous year! Hopefully, things will go better this year!

We will include all the podcasts, videos, and articles we featured last year. We've also added the podcast, Audible Farm, an interview podcast from local musician Peter Stockdale of the Des Moines punk band, 3 Finger Betty, and Iowa metal band, Unity.

We also, on an irregular basis, will be featuring older articles, audio, and video, from sources like KRUI 89.7 FM in Iowa City, Des Moines Music Coalition, KURE radio in Ames, as well as older websites like Lock N Load from the Sioux Falls/Sioux City area, Des Noise, Des Moines is Not Boring, Iowaves, and Band Bombshell, among others.

I'm not doing any podcast of the favorite tunes from the Iowa Music Showcase podcast, because - 1) I haven't had the time, and 2) we only did four podcasts last year! But below I'll list all the boring top ten's I've listed on previous years.

Also, we may fewer Iowa Music Showcase podcasts, depending on how time and whatnot goes for me. But I will continue to feature playlists, compilation albums, videos, and other websites where you can find Iowa music.

But in the five months we were running last year, we did manage to do a showcase of Sump Pump Records. And if I can get the podcasts up and running again, I'd be happy to showcase other Iowa labels!

Okay, now it's time for all the math and list nerds! Here's some various top ten lists for our website for 2018!

I took some time off to deal simultaneously deal with a divorce and unemployment. The div'Lorce is finalized and I'm ready to do temp work if I have to. So there's no excuse to get this thing back up and running.

We'll be featuring the same stuff as before, and when we can, try to play catch up with the stuff we missed while the site was down!

So I just want to say thanks to my dozen or so regular readers and followers! And if of you want to help me out, so I can keep this site going when I run into trouble, I would greatly appreciate it and you can write me at iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com.

So please let all your friends, neighbors, enemies, frenemies, people you meet on the streets, or whatever that we are back!

As a bonus, here's an updated Back playlist from another time we were gone for a while!

PLAYLISTS - Random Iowa Music YouTube Playlist 3

Once again, using a random sampling method, we picked out 5 videos featuring Iowa artists.

And diverse lot this is! We start out with the countrified pop of The Nadas, then some experimental music with saxaphone, a polka parody, some more experimental music, and finally close out with some hard rock, showing once again the diversity of Iowa music!

If you're an Iowa (or Omaha, Quad Cities, or Sioux Falls) music act, and you have a YouTube channel, let me know at iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com and I'll follow you!

PLAYLISTS - Vacation: Iowa Style

Well, since I've been on break, I'd thought I'd just be a playlist about that! So here are some tunes by Iowa artists about vacation, relaxing, and taking a break!

PLAYLISTS - New Iowa Music on SoundCloud 2 *AND* 3

I was going to present the first playlist last week, but instead put together some playlist for The Uncertainty Festival coming up this weekend. I'll be there Friday night. Say hi if you see a balding, overweight, middle age man in Clark Kent glasses!

But since I didn't put that playlist up last week, you guys get a twofer! I've got the playlist I made last week, plus a new up-to-date one.

Over half of the first one was hip hop. But there are some instrumentals in there, one rock, one electronic music, and one piano music.

The second is more eclectic featuring hip hop, electronic music, rock, and a singer-songwriter.

PLAYLISTS: The Uncertainty Music Festival 2018

Today, we present to you four playlists - from YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, and Spotify - featuring artists who will be appearing at the Uncertainty Festival in Ames, IA, from Thurs, Apr 19, to Sat, Apr 21. For more information, you can go to http://www.novalabs.info/uncertainty-festival-2018/.

It's a fairly eclectic collection of blues, electronic music, folk music, indie music, among other genres. So have a listen, and if it sounds good, drop by Ames and check out the bands live!

"It’s just the second year for the Uncertainty Festival, but the music event has already grown to a three-day affair rather than two. The downtown Ames music fest will be held Thursday, April 19, through Saturday, April 21, and will include four showcases of talent, two of which will offer free admission.

"With a hint of a science theme, the Uncertainty Festival will have three parts: Particle, Wave and Light...

"Dudley said he’s excited by the growth of the Uncertainty Festival’s second year and hopes to expand it even further next year. 'It’s been an amazing experience,” he said. “This year we have all-Iowa performers. We feel like we have some of the greatest bands in the state.'”
- from the article, "Uncertainty Festival returns to downtown Ames April 19-21", by Ronna Lawless, in The Ames Tribune

PLAYLISTS: We're Back!

Well, yours truly, Dan OlderMusicGeek, had to take a few weeks off to get some things in my life back in proper order, leaving me no time for Iowa Music Showcase.

But we're back now! And to celebrate, I created a playlist of songs from Iowa artists about coming back and returning, or just doing something again.

Again, as with most of our Spotify playlists, these songs are in no particular order and are best listened to in shuffle play.

PLAYLISTS: Mardi Gras - Iowa Style

Some people may find it strange for a website specializing in Iowa music to have a Mardi Gras post.

Well, there is a town named Iowa in Louisiana! - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa,_Louisiana

And although we are much further up The Mississippi River than New Orleans, I appear not to be the only lover in Iowa of the sounds and music coming from The Mississippi Delta and the Lousiana swamps and bayous. A few other Iowans, and Omahans, have found that sound as captivating as myself.

So with these two playlists, we present some Mardi Gras music for you with an Iowa flavor.

The first playlist features shorter clips with one or two songs. I put it in order of popularity, but I think it works best on shuffle. It features tunes from Omaha's Polka Police, their cajun/Zydeco band, The Prairie Gators, and their accordion party band, The Mighty Nish Band, as well as Des Moines's own NOLA Jazz Band, The Pelicans when they were The Party Gras Band, and our brass band, Grand Avenue Ruckus, plus some Dixieland jazz performed by Iowa jazz musicians.

The second playlists features whole shows, mostly from the NOLA Jazz Band, but a couple from The Pelicans, again when they were The Party Gras Band, and Grand Ave Ruckus, as well as Iowa jazz musicians doing New Orleans music.

PLAYLIST: Net Neutrality (and Information on How to Continue the Fight)

Hello all! Some of you may think the issue of Net Neutrality ended when The FCC voted to repeal it.

But you are mistaken. That was just a recent battle in a long war that we have been fighting for a couple of years now!

The lastest battle involves what is called a Congressional Review Act or CRA. This is a law that "empowers Congress to review, by means of an expedited legislative process, new federal regulations issued by government agencies and, by passage of a joint resolution, to overrule a regulation." (Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_Review_Act) What this bascially means is The Congress can overturn The FCC's ruling on repealing Net Neutrality.

Why should you try to save net neutrality, you may ask. Net Neutrality is the rule that allows all websites the same chance of being found and to go at the same speed as any other website. Without Net Neutrality, sites that can't afford to pay extra - like your favorite local band's website, maybe Bandcamp, maybe SoundCloud - will load up more slowly than other websites.

Also, without Net Neutrality, your Internet Service Provider can send you to websites they want you to go to, like sending you to Apple instead of Bandcamp.  They can also block any website that they feel is inappropriate.

You can prevent this from happening, as well as help independent musicians, artists, craft makers, plus small businesses and new startups, schools and education, health websites, activists, and others who would be hurt.

For a Congressional Review Act to be voted on without going through a committee, 30 senators must sponsor it. Thanks to people calling in and demanding it, it has FORTY sponsors.

Now we need 51 senators to vote to stop The FCC from repealing Net Neutrality.

PLAYLISTS: Thanksgiving - Iowa Style

Howdy all! This week I bring a treat fitting our upcoming American holiday.

Here is a playlist featuring Iowa artists all doing with giving thanks!

Happy holidays, everyone!

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Leave me alone! I'm resting!

Okay, if you read the social media's "One year ago..." post or just remember from last November, most of this is going to be a rerun.

But in November, I take it easy. Do some behind the scenes stuff. But no podcasts, playlists, or anything else!

PLAYLISTS: Iowa Halloween Music (on Spotify and YouTube)

I won't lie, Iowa Music Scene! You have let me down! You are not deserving to be an assistant to The Evil Doctor OlderMusicGeek!

I gave you a simple assignment! And a year to do it! And still you have failed me!

Eye-gor from "Young Frankenstein" could do a better job!

There are still no Iowa Halloween music playlists except my own!

Am I forever damned to live an eternity of listening to Iowa-made Halloween music that only I have discovered?! What a sad and weary life some of us horror clichés live!

Well, anyway, you useless lot, I have again made a second playlist. Okay, it's first time to make this second playlist. I mean I made second playlists before. But this is the first second playlist for Iowa Halloween music. I think!

Damn you, lot! You have made my brain befuddled as your own!

*Sigh* Okay, I have made a second playlist of Halloween music from Iowa (and Omaha) music acts. This time from YouTube.

If you can't manage to make your own playlist, you can dare provide suggestions for mine at iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com.

I have also made a few additions to the Spotify playlist I made last year and have included it too!

PLAYLISTS: A Playlist for Street Heat and the Eclipse

Sorry, again, running late. Seems trying to get my house ready to sell and going to see the eclipse didn't leave me time to do the podcast this week. So instead of the podcast, you get yet another playlist!

But you get two actually!

The first one one actually comes from another Spotify user, Zoey Miller, who put together a playlist for the Street Heat music festival going on the Sunday before Labor Day, Sept 3, on 4th Street in Des Moines.

I have to admit though, about half of these bands are from Minneapolis and one from Chicago. But I guess I can show some neighbourly love.

PLAYLISTS: Iowa Stock 2017 Spotify Playlist

Sorry this is so late. Family matters kept me from working on my side project, this website.

This week is, I hope, the first of numerous playlists featuring acts from the Iowa Stock music festival going down this Labor Day weekend.

UPDATE 12 Aug 2017 - Iowa Stock has announced that it will have to cut back on some of the acts - http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/entertainment/music/2017/08/10/really-believe-after-few-calls-and-emails-still-going-solid-event-even-if-im-not-one-bring-home/555560001/. So with that being said, I won't be doing any more playlists since I'm not sure who will be playing.

If you haven't heard, for 4 days, in St Charles, you will be able to check all Iowa music acts from various genres on various stages. You can check out all the details here - https://iowastock.com/

But basically, this is the kind of music festival that Iowa Music Showcase would put on if we had the money and the time. Kind of like a gigantic version of Iowa Music Showcase Live, the show we did back in February.

So I put together a playlist featuring all the Iowa Stock acts that I could find on Spotify. If I missed anyone, please let me know!
