Did This Queer Man “Enjoy” Netflix’s ‘Adolescence’? No.

Yesterday, I got an email from Netflix under the subject: “Enjoying Adolescence? Either way, let us know.”

First, it seems a particularly ironic question. It’s been a very long time since I actually experienced adolescence. And, to be real, most folks remember that period of life as being not particularly joyful.

In fact, those years, when our bodies are changing and developing, when every event seems like life-or-death, when we’re certain no one, especially our dim-witted parents, could possibly understand what we’re going through, are often torturous… for the adolescent and their parents.

But, of course, the question in Netflix’s email wasn’t about my adolescence.

The streaming service was seeking my feedback on the four-part British mini-series entitled Adolescence. And their email questionnaire leaves me struggling with a quandary.

Because, no. I didn’t “enjoy” Adolescence. I found it excruciating to watch. And I certainly don’t want my personal Netflix algorithms to direct me to more shows like it. I honestly don’t think my old, queer heart
