Breakout is a community that unites, inspires, and amplifies those using their lives to make the world a better place.

Along our journey, we learned that the most inspirational stories aren’t in conference centers, but in the streets of Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans, Atlanta, Miami etc. We became obsessed with shining a light on people lifting up their communities from within.

As we followed our passion, the makeup of our community spread beyond just tech entrepreneurs to spoken-word artists in Baltimore, legendary barbershop owners in Detroit, and social justice reformers in New York. Today, we're a national crew from all different geographies, professions, socio-economic backgrounds, but are bound by a common belief that things get better through our work together. Along with attending our events, watching our films and shopping our friends swag, we ask that you if you believe in our mission of championing change-makers, become a member and contribute monthly.

What if instead of just taking this accomplished group of leaders to resort type settings, what if they went to growth cities? Environment's where "Breakers" could use their minds and learn from local leaders, organizations, and entrepreneurs who were innovating and working to solve civic issues. And what if during these conversations, there was a way to use the groups network, experience and access to capital to be helpful?

Today, Breakout provides a nationwide platform through events and content for people to unite, inspire, and amplify around impactful work; challenging and motivating social action.

A visit to the Audubon House and Tropical Gardens is a step back in time to the world of a maritime pilot and master wrecker in mid-19th century Key West.

I consult on their marketing and programming strategy as it's a must stop in Key West.

To sustain the museum, the gardens serve as one of the top event venues in Key West, a favorite for tropical weddings. Drop by for a tour and tell them Chris sent you!

http://www.breakout.today/aboutus Breakout was born in New York City in the spring of 2014. Michael Farber and Graham Cohen gathered the city's top young business leaders to generate new ideas, new partnerships, and new friendships. What started as casual gatherings in Michael's Soho apartment quickly morphed into the first Breakout weekend – 100 entrepreneurs spontaneously flew out of NYC for a whirlwind weekend in Miami. The goal was to "break" these talented individuals out of their typical routines and comfort zones, to put them in a special environment where they could grow, inspire, and build together. New friendships were seeded, new investments were made, and new businesses were created. But something was missing... What if instead of vacationing to resort type settings, this elite group of creators were challenged to explore the inner workings of developing growth cities? Environments where these "Breakers" could both impact and be impacted by local leaders, grassroots organizations, and social entrepreneurs? And what if there was a way to use Breakers' network and capital to be helpful? Breakout's model of 'Impact Eventing' was created to answer these questions. It is an experiment in cross pollination and cultural exchange. Can the minds of our carefully curated network of highly successful innovators be changed by cities like Detroit and Baltimore? Can the cities be changed by us? We think absolutely yes. TL;DR Breakout brings entrepreneurs, influencers, and innovators from all regions of the country to emerging cities for immersive and experiential retreats, introducing them to the places and the people who are making a positive difference.

The Urban.Us Network We want startup teams to be able to focus on building and testing their offerings and reduce the time they need to build a network of supporters. So Urban.Us is building a network of advisors, investors and urban leaders to ensure that startup teams can get fast feedback and increase their chances to win pilots. We believe that once firms can show success in their first city and demonstrate that similar problems exist in many other cities, they will make attractive early stage investments. Promising entrepreneurs will be invited to join the network in exchange for a minority ownership stake, following a model popularized by startup accelerators. We’re putting the profit motive at the core because we think this is how we can create sustainable impact. But this is not our only motivation, Urban.Us is a Public Benefit Corporation. So its founding documents enshrine an additional responsibility to improve urban environments. Urban.Us is being organized by Shaun Abrahamson and Stonly Baptiste. Shaun is an investor in companies like ZocDoc, Trialpay, Refinery29, Sense Networks and Crowdtwist and helped run global challenges like Starbucks Betacup, Life Edited and $300 House. Stonly is a serial entrepreneur who has founded companies in IT, telecommunication, and cloud computing. In the coming weeks we will be sharing more details about the the rest of the team and the growing network of participants in the Urban.Us network. Our most important task is building a great network for our startup teams. So we are looking for urban leaders, civic innovators, founders, startups, early stage investors, researchers and anyone who is interested in working with startups to test new approaches to making our urban environment better. If this sounds like you or someone you know, please get in touch.
