The title of this post is a question I field often. When I poll a room of small business owners I get lots of different answers, most, more or less, pointing to advertising or other lead generation activities. To some extent the confusion comes from textbook definitions that don’t translate well to the real world. Here’s one from the Investopedia. The commercial functions involved in transferring goods from producer to consumer. That was helpful wasn’t it? Here is the Indispensable Marketing definition: getting someone (ideal target client), who has a need (problem or desire), to become aware of you and then trust you enough to buy. Now, when you have a marketing process in place this expands to – getting someone, who has a need or problem, to become aware of you, educated on your difference/problems you solve, sample your expertise/capabilites, buy your services and refer you. Awareness and education are it for the real world small business and unless you’ve got oodles of cash lying around to buy that through heart warming TV spots, you better get down in the trenches and figure out how to educate, give and build trust. So, do a small business owner a favor and share this simple definition with them. It just might make marketing a little easier. 👀 Recently I was speaking with the CEO of a 100 year old manufacturer and distributor in the South East part of the country.👀 Our conversation revolved around the development and installation of a "marketing" focused sales strategy. You see, being in business over a certain period of time often brings its own set of challenges. 🤕 outdated focus on client needs and priorities 🤕 out of touch buying process 🤕 shift in the competitive landscape 🤕 aged point of view of how your brand is perceived 🤕 communication of outdated benefits clients receive from working with you Developing a smart strategy plan is a process. And from my perspective, it is a process that requires strong marketing leadership. Why marketing? Because the required research and analysis is a core marketing function. Don’t make the mistake of focusing at the beginning on the services you offer or the way your company is organized. The best strategies/tactics/campaigns revolve around the market (a narrowly defined ideal customer) as it really is, not the way we think it is or wish it were or used to be. 👏 No matter how perfectly you state your marketing strategy, if it doesn’t live firmly in the tactics you employ to develop and keep customers it’s all for nothing.👏 In today’s small business environment, your competitors may be more focused on the shiny objects in their marketing, things like SEO, responsive web design, pay-per-click advertising, and of course whatever the latest fad in social media happens to be in any particular week, rather than creating a strong marketing strategy to ensure the effectiveness of these things. #socialemediamarketing #smallbusinessmarketing #marketingstrategy #marketingtips

🤔 I don’t know about you, but one messaging strategy I’m ALL in on right now is taping into "solving a problem that is valued by some segment of the market" and using that as your core positioning.🤔 For example, I own Indispensable Marketing a small business marketing consulting firm and we basically say, “All you need to know about marketing is that we install it as a process to increase visibility and make the phone ring.” Marketing for a lot of business owners and CEOs of small businesses is sort of complicated with all the moving parts of ideal client development, messaging, SEO, social media, websites, etc. And a lot of people like to make it complicated. What we've done is taken a positioning that really is about this problem that some small business owners value. You want structured, repeatable, and consistent marketing and you want increased visibility that makes the phone ring, so that’s all you need to know about our services. There are so many opportunities to do this in your business but I think it takes a special point of view. We as business owners and CEOs are so in tune with this idea of promoting what we provide that we leave out what we solve. And most prospects only understand the problems that they’re trying to solve and care less about what you provide. #idealclient #customervalues #marketyoursolutions #properpromotion #differentiation #smallbusinessmarketing #smallbiz #businesstips

As a small business owner, you’ve likely heard that social media is the ultimate platform to grow your business. While that’s true, here’s a harsh reality: without a overarching marketing strategy, all the social media participation in the world won’t save you. In fact, it might just expose how your business is indistinguishable from every other business claiming to do what you do. That’s a nice way of saying you’re doomed to compete on price alone — a race to the bottom that no one wins. #strategybeforetactics #marketingstrategy #socialmedia #marketing #smallbusiness

👉 The first step to creating a successful marketing system is to identify the problem that you solve for your clients. 👉 It’s important to find a problem that is not only relevant to your target market but one that you can solve in an effective and efficient manner. Once you have identified the problem, you can then develop a strategy to solve it. Or even better, you already know the problem you solve. If you know this, you need to focus on promoting it in your messaging. Don’t promote your own brand or strategy. Instead, focus on promoting how you solve are solving your customers' unique problems in your unique way. Potential clients will also gravitate towards you over your competitors because you see what problem they are trying to solve. They will see that you get their problem, you get their business, and you get them. #problemsolving #strategicmarketing #marketing #marketingmessage

Chances are that today, you’re committing this strategy mistake of trying to be “everything to everyone”. We've all been there. If I'm a dentist, anybody with teeth is my ideal patient, right? Or if I'm a kitchen remodeler, anybody with a kitchen is my ideal homeowner, right? Or if I'm a chiropractor, anybody with a back is my ideal customer, right? But this approach, while maybe attracting clients, fails to identify your most profitable, ideal, and best customers. Without understanding this, how can you effectively attract more of them? Focus on being the right thing to the right people. Don’t guess who your ideal client is. It is possible to have multiple ideal clients, just make sure that you develop targeted marketing messaging and tactics for each. Basing your work on specific buyer profiles/personas prevents you from sitting in your office just making stuff up, which is the cause of most ineffective marketing. No one wants what you sell - they want their problem solved. The first thing that your website must do is - promise to solve a real problem. Avoid those big headlines telling what you do or what industry you're in. If people are on your website, they probably know that already. Instead, tell them the most significant pain point that you solve. That’s the greatest opportunity to differentiate your business from every other company that does what you do. Longevity and success in business depends on establishing customer trust. Today, from moment a potential customer encounters your brand, be it through a referral, phone call, a Google Business Profile, a website visit or LinkedIn profile, sets the tone for your entire relationship—every interaction—between a company and its customers is a critical opportunity to either build trust or erode it. Allow me to illustrate this through a real business story I got from Tommy Mello who is currently growing A1 Garage from $200M to $1B: https://buff.ly/3JvRcxT #customertrust #businessrelationship #keytosuccess #marketing #marketingstrategy

🔴In my discussions with local service businesses, a common objective often emerges: the desire to enhance online visibility. 🔴 It's understandable—being easily found when potential customers are searching for services or products is key. However, amidst this pursuit of visibility, there's a critical aspect that's often overlooked: credibility. Let me explain: What if your website is found on Google, but when visitors arrive, the messaging doesn't resonate? There's no photos of your work or visual aids to showcase what the experience could be like, no insight into the process of working with you, and no social proof of how other people felt or the results they achieved. You see, getting visibility without also building credibility is worthless. #visibility #potentialcustomers #credibility #smallbusinessowner #onlinemarketing
