Two suspected livestock thieves lynched in Murang’a

Two suspected livestock thieves were today morning lynched and their bodies set ablaze by angry residents in Gakonya village, Kiharu constituency in Murang’a County.

Residents on patrol at dawn stumbled upon the suspects ferrying four cows believed to have been stolen in a lorry and confronted them.

Residents say that they decided to take the law into their own hands as their efforts to have security officers track and arrest the cattle thieves had fallen on deaf ears.

Muraya wa Gatu, a resident of Gakonya village, Kiharu constituency says they have been spending sleepless nights to protect their properties and animals from the thieves.

“We had been keeping vigil at night because of rampant insecurity and thefts of livestock in Kandundu, Kabuta and Gakonya areas. We have suffered for long, but today it was the 40th day of a thief,” he said.

Susan Wanjiku, a victim whose cow was among those recovered on Saturday says the cattle thieves strike in the dead of night, steal their animals and drive them away for slaughter.

“I heard my dogs barking and when I got out is when I saw my cow was missing in the shed and that’s when I raised alarm and people were mobilized and a manhunt started,” she said.

She says sensing danger, the suspects took off in different directions but the two were cornered and beaten unconscious by the residents who were armed with crude weapons after an alarm was raised by a resident.

The lorry which was carrying the four cows believed to have been stolen from different homes was chased by residents before they caught up with it at Kandundu and set it ablaze.

The driver of the lorry and another person managed to escape on foot after ditching the lorry near Mathioya River Bridge.

Police officers from Murang’a police station and the Murang’a county fire engine rushed to the scene to rescue the victims but it was too late as the suspects had already succumbed and bodies burnt beyond recognition.

“Police need to put a police post in between the fast-growing villages for a quick response when residents raise an alarm. We have been reporting cases of livestock thefts to the police but no action has been taken against the culprits, and that is why we have taken up arms to defend our animals,” a resident said.

Francis Manyeki, Chairman of a local slaughterhouse confirmed that there had been rampant thefts of animals in the area.

“It is true residents have been losing their animals to the rustlers, we are victims also as we lost eight cows, then another six were lost We cannot entirely blame the police as they were trying to bring the culprits to book,” he said.

Confirming the incident, Murang’a East sub-county police boss Mary Wakuu said they have started investigations into the matter.

“We will start with the burning of the lorry as we want to identify the owner and who was driving it, I would also ask the residents of this area as I am sure no criminal can just come nowhere to steal an area he has no idea about, it means there is some bad apple among them working with the thieves so I would urge them we collaborate and work together,” she said.

The remains of the thieves, who are yet to be identified, were taken to the Murang’a county mortuary as residents vowed to continue hunting down the other suspects who escaped.
