Ask the DJ: Daire Patel – Top 10 Songs to Listen to Whilst the Sun Sets

Daire Patel is a young Irish artist from Kildare, who combines a hip-hop feel with a lo-fi bedroom pop sound. His latest single is the reflective ‘Pretty Sweet’, which includes playful rhymes, acoustic chords, and expressive lyrics.

“The song is about coming to terms with growing up, getting older and accepting that in life things don’t always go the way you hoped they would,” says Patel. “The lyrics “I wake up I go back to sleep” which form the backbone of the song is just a commentary on how I was living my life at that point. A lot of the song however is more so about coming to terms with growing up, getting older and accepting that in life things don’t always go the way you hoped they would.”

The accompanying visuals for ‘Pretty Sweet’ – also the title track track for his upcoming EP – bring to life Patel’s introspective lyrics, as we see him wake up in different locations and his struggle as he goes through the motions of everyday life. “For today’s Ask the DJ segment, I have compiled a list of my top 10 songs to listen to whilst the sun sets.”

1. Frank Ocean – ‘White Ferrari’

“Hard to find a song more perfect for a sunset than this. A masterpiece, Frank’s voice is truly mesmerising.”

2. Mac Miller – ‘Grand Finale’

“Mac Miller has a lot of contenders for this category but the synthy instrumental and beautiful guitar solo really make this a great sunset song.”

3. Dijon – ‘Nico’s Red Truck’

“Dijon’s lyrics and voice on this track sound so warm and nostalgic, one of my favourite songs ever.”

4. Kevin Abstract – ‘Peach’

“Not all my sunset songs are sad ok! This one is just Kevin Abstract, Dominic Fike and Bearface all coming together for a great vibe.”

5. Kanye West – ‘Everything I Am’

“Does this one even need an explanation? Just listen to the piano…”

6. Kendrick Lamar – ‘A.D.H.D’

“Pure nostalgia for me, I remember listening to this song for the first time almost a decade ago, it sounds just as good then as it did now.”

7. Bakar – ‘Noun’

“Bakar’s voice on his slower songs has this fantastic calming and expressive quality which lends itself perfectly to a sunset.”

8. The Drums – ‘Days’

“Every good sunset playlist needs some indie rock, and this is one of my favourites. I could listen to the chorus on this song forever. It’s that good.”

9. Brockhampton – ‘Sunny’

“The clue is in the name with this one, Brockhampton’s most underrated song. Great hook, amazing verse from Ameer and a beautiful outro.”

10. Bennett Coast – ‘Moonboy’

“This song genuinely makes you feel like you’re in a movie, it has a dream like quality which really transports your mind somewhere else. Bennett is going to be huge.”
