| | | | | Hello Everyone! Are you enjoying the rain? I got my garden in while on holidays and watching the flowers grow 10 cm. with the rain is a real blessing! Not much to report this month. I had a full group for my workshop on 'Using Novels, Magazines and the Internet in Your Matches'. If you were not able to register but would still like to see the booklet with dozens of suggestions on how to use these resources with your learner, just give me a call or send me an email and I will send you a copy. As summer approaches and things are slowing down, please remember to get all your reports in, and remember to let me know if you or your student will be taking a holiday or break over the summer. Also, I've discovered this month that several people had not alerted me to changes in addresses, phone numbers etc. Please check with your learner and update me if it is necessary.
As it is summer, I will be working on several curriculum development projects. I would be so grateful if any of our tutors would think that they would like to help me in this area. The Book Club, Singalong and Grammar Groups close for the Summer. There will room in the fall for attendees in all the groups so please talk to your students about joining an Auxiliary group. The extra practice and community feeling in these groups is very beneficial for the learner. I am looking for another grammar tutor for the fall and someone who could help me with the Singalong. Please let me know if you would be interested. They will both be daytime classes.
Enjoy your summer 🙂 We have exciting things planned for the Fall!!

| | We are proud to announce Krista received the Janet Hughes Award, presented in recognition of a person who has contributed their work to lessening food insecurity in Edmonton. Krista has been a volunteer with PALS since August of 2021. Shortly after joining us, she approached the staff to ask about setting up a food pantry in the PALS office. Krista has been dedicated not just in her efforts as a volunteer tutor, but also in ensuring the pantry is stocked and people feel welcome to take what they need. |

| | | Tutor Advisory Committee |
| | | We at the PALS Tutor to Tutor Sharing Circle would like to invite you to our upcoming meetup on Thursday, June 23rd at 6:30-7:45 pm via Zoom. The Sharing Circle is an opportunity to meet and talk with other tutors at PALS. The event is run for tutors, by tutors. This month’s topic will focus on exam preparation. Many of our learners aspire to become apprentices or pursue higher education at institutions such as NAIT; however, acceptance to any program requires passing a multiple-choice exam that covers Math, Science and Reading Comprehension. As a tutor specializing in a specific subject area, you may feel uncomfortable giving assistance in other areas of study. Join us to explore how you can build lessons plans that incorporate the various subjects and ways to build partnerships with other tutors to help your learner achieve the best possible outcome. So, grab a warm beverage, log on to Zoom and let’s share our ideas, experiences and our unique perspectives! To obtain the invitation link to the Zoom Circle: Please RSVP to tac@palsedmonton.ca by Friday, June 17th, 2022 (An invitation, sent by email, will give you a link to the Circle event) | |

| | | | PALS Podcast Podcasts are FREE audio stories or newscasts created by big organisations or individuals. They can be downloaded on to a phone or computer to be listened to or streamed (listened to using WIFI or cellular data). Podcasts are a great way to learn new things or listen to while travelling, cleaning or walking. In our podcast we discuss the importance of literacy in society and the literacy pillars we teach through PALS. Check out our latest podcasts: Financial Literacy Erich Ly is a practicing Chartered Professional Accounting who's worked with over 300 small businesses and individuals on taxes, financial reporting, accounting, and business consulting in Alberta Canada. Erich has a degree in psychology and a successful career in corporate retail sales and team management. Erich has a people-first approach to being a professional accountant and learns both widely and deeply across a range of subject matters to be an effective professional for his clients. Erich embraces being a "thorough generalist" at heart and loves to learn from others while reflecting on his own experiences. During our chat he identifies some of the challenges that we face in our digitally driven, frictionless payment world, and breaks down how to become more financially aware. A Journey from Brazil to Edmonton Sandro Silva is an Edmonton-based filmmaker and the co-founder of Dona Ana Films & Multimedia. Before his career in media production, Sandro was a copyright lawyer in São Paulo, his hometown. Sandro is one of our tutors at PALS. He worked with our learners creating videos to share their stories with the world. Today he is sharing his story, from the favelas in Brazil to Edmonton, Alberta and from Law to Documentary Film Maker. Listen on Podbean, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or on our website. We would love your feedback! What would you like us to chat about next? | |
