Description

This is Cassidy Arch in Capitol Reef National Park (Utah), named after the famous Butch Cassidy who is said to have hidden out in the canyon’s nooks and crannies with the Sundance Kid. When you are atop the mountain, you can’t really see the arch until you walk closer and closer to the edge of the overlook where it sits below you. The trail is about 3.5 miles round trip with a 1000’ gain in elevation, and is rated as ‘strenuous’. I thought ‘moderate’ was more accurate although the altitude (more than 5000’) makes even a moderate trail more challenging. But no worries if you get out of breath, you just stop for some photos! Capitol Reef National Park lies in Utah’s south-central desert, an oasis of colorful sandstone cliffs, impressive domes, and soaring monoliths. The park got its name in part from the great white rock formations which resemble the U.S. Capitol building. The area was designated as a national monument in 1937 and reclassified as a national park in 1971.
