There’s a day dedicated to a nation’s independence, one specifically for being thankful and others for celebrating other important national milestones. Interestingly, there’s one day that’s less known, even though it’s highly impactful: World Water Day.

In this article, we’ll highlight everything you need to know about this day, including what it is, why you should care, and how you can support or donate to this cause.

What Is World Water Day?

Here’s an interesting fact, World Water Day has been around for close to 3 decades! It was proposed to the United Nations in 1992 and was first held in 1993. This day is celebrated on March 22 every year, and it aims to help people that really need water in the world by drawing more attention to the water-related challenges they face.

Water is vital for human survival. However, it’s so easy to take it for granted when you can simply turn on the faucet anytime you need it. What you may not realize is that there are so many people all over the globe that have no access to safe and clean drinking water.

In fact, according to the CDC, there are around 884 million people around the world that don’t have access to basic drinking water services. Even more shocking is the fact that 1 in every 4 healthcare facilities don’t have basic water facilities.

Why Is World Water Day Important?

The main reason we celebrate World Water Day is to highlight the benefits of freshwater accessibility. This day is also dedicated to advocating for freshwater resources to be sustainably managed.

So, why should you pay more attention to World Water Day?

  • Water impacts millions of people: Drinking contaminated water can cause life-threatening diseases like cholera. This is why it’s surprising that 1 in 3 people worldwide lacks access to clean drinking water.
  • Wildlife requires clean drinking water to thrive: Research estimates that around 1 million animals die annually due to water pollution. Unfortunately, most people fail to realize that water pollution occurs in multiple ways, including chemical runoffs and physical litter. The pollutants then make the water toxic for animals that depend on it for habitation and consumption.
  • Water impacts the environment: Every year, World Water Day has a theme that’s intertwined with the environment. This year’s theme is ‘Groundwater, Making the invisible, visible.’ Most of the environmental challenges we face are directly related to water through droughts, floods, and water pollution.
