Today I’m going to share a sneaky SEO secret (That Google doesn’t want you to know)
It is a technique that needs to be actioned with caution, but still works extremely well in 2024.
What am I talking about?
✔ Tiered Link Building
In simple terms, tiered link building consists of creating multiple layers (or "tiers") of backlinks leading to your guest posts, which themselves link back to your main sites.
The purpose of this multi-tiered approach is to strengthen the authority and influence of the primary backlinks that directly affect your website's ranking in SERPs.
Let’s see this in action with an example:
👉 Jake writes a new blog post for his #ecommerce site.
👉 The post gets indexed, but Jake wants it on page 1 faster, so he builds 3 links to that blog.
📝 NOTE: these links to the main site are known as Tier 1 links. They usually consist of guest posts, niche edits or press releases (You can build those manually with regular outreach, or by using a tool like SERPzilla).
👉 Now Jake’s post has gained some positions, but the blog is still on page 2 of Google.
👉 Jake decides it’s time to go one extra step and build some Tier 2 links.
Tier 2 links are directed towards your Tier 1 links rather than your main website.
The purpose of Tier 2 links is to strengthen the authority and effectiveness of Tier 1 links by passing additional link juice and relevance through them to your primary site.
These links are often grey-hat, coming from cheap PBNs, Web 2.0, forums and other parts of the web (If you don’t know what you’re doing, I highly recommend you test this stuff on a site you don’t care about first).
👉 A few things can happen at this point:
After 4-5 weeks, the blog gets on to page 1 and Jake doesn’t need to do anything else.
Rankings don’t move, so Jake builds Tier 3 links to the tier 2’s (You can virtually have as many tiers as you want, but I wouldn’t go beyond tier 3).
Rankings move a little, but Jake decides to improve other on-page elements to get the blog higher in SERPs.
⚠ A few words of caution:
Potential Google Penalties: Google may impose penalties on your site if it detects unnatural linking patterns or considers your link-building strategy to be manipulative.
Quality Over Quantity: Focusing on the mass production of links without considering their relevance or quality can detrimentally affect your website's SEO. Use a tool like ICOPIFY or Serpzilla to find backlink opportunities, but don’t forget to do your own due diligence before selecting a guest site.
Complexity in Management: Managing tiered link building can become intricate, especially as more tiers and links are added.
Short-term vs Long-term: While tiered link building might provide short-term improvements in SEO, it could pose long-term risks to the health and rankings of your site if not conducted cautiously.
