Crab Hotpot [Print Replica] Kindle Edition
So we engaged two master storywriters, Gabrielle Dolan and Kendall Haven, to coach Mekong Capital’s team to develop our own story writing and storytelling capabilities. Since that time, our team members have written more than 500 stories, which we share with each other in monthly storytelling workshops. This has enabled us to raise awareness throughout Mekong Capital’s team about what has worked best, or not worked, at our investee companies or within Mekong Capital.
Crab Hotpot might appear to be a fictional story, but it is all based on situations that actually happened at Mekong Capital. I wrote the story in mid-2020 when one of those situations had arisen – I wanted to put our team’s attention on what wasn’t working, and what would work. Each crab is based on a real person who is a current or former employee of Mekong Capital. And many people, including me, can see different aspects of ourselves in the various crabs.
Mekong Capital applies an “ontological” approach towards causing ourselves and our investee companies to achieve a shared vision for the future. By “ontological”, we mean that who people are being and how situations occur for them, shape what actions they take or what conversations they have, which determine what results they get. So our attention is on who we are being, and how things occur for us, which do or don’t lead to whatever results we are committed to for the future. You may notice this theme throughout the story.
In 2001, Chris founded Mekong Capital as Vietnam’s first Private Equity investment firm. The first 6 years of Mekong Capital were a struggle, and Mekong Capital’s investments weren’t successful.
In 2007, Chris started his journey of personal transformation so that he could become a more effective leader that Mekong Capital needed. The next year, Chris arranged a 3-year transformation program for Mekong Capital. Initially there was a lot of resistance, but by the completion of the process, Mekong Capital had been completely reinvented and transformed. This led to the creation of a new model of Private Equity, an ontological approach, which starts with who people are being and how they see things. Chris, together with the team at Mekong Capital, discovered that companies organized around a clear vision for the future, who are building robust management and leadership teams, and a strong culture and core values, are consistently successful. At that time, Mekong Capital became a much more successful and value-added investor, making early investments in companies such as MobileWorld, Golden Gate, Masan Food, Phu Nhuan Jewelry, PharmaCity and F88, and other companies which grew at a consistently fast pace and achieved their vision.
Chris’ purpose in life is to contribute to a new future for human civilization such that people are being, or have access to being complete, present, open, natural, healthy, transformed, and experiencing choice in all matters of their lives. He is passionate about leadership and transformation.
Chris is also very excited about the role that the people of Vietnam will play in working together to fulfill the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Chris believes the Vietnamese people have a deep history of living in harmony with nature, and will work together to protect, regenerate, and live in harmony with Vietnam’s beautiful ecosystems - rivers, oceans, forests, and organic agriculture.
