Amazon has chosen to cancel Prime Video's Paper Girls after just one season.

As reported by Deadline, the adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s graphic novel of the same name will not be renewed on Prime Video for Season 2. This news comes after the sci-fi series premiered its eight-episode first season on July 29, which received a mostly positive response from critics and audiences alike, with its Rotten Tomatoes score being 90% and its audience score boasting 88%. While Paper Girls will not return to Prime Video, it will reportedly be shopped around by Legendary Television to other outlets.

Based on the Image Comics graphic novel series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, Paper Girls was announced as a series in 2019, with Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers serving as showrunners and executive producers alongside Stephany Folsom. In a recent interview, Chiang explained that the idea of the Paper Girls encountering their future selves "seemed so natural" for this time travel story, because "a lot of time travel is so much about what could happen, what regrets you might have, and seeing how your future self turned out."

"I don't know if anybody's turned out the way they thought they would 10 years ago," Chiang continued. "So for these girls who are just on the cusp of becoming teenagers and then adults, to see where your life ends up is a really cool thing. Having Ali Wong play older Erin is fantastic because we know her so much through her comedy, so then here to see her do something dramatic and a little bittersweet is a really fantastic showcase for her."

While Paper Girls revealed its live-action cast in April 2021, Prime Video recently announced the release date for Paper Girls along with first-look photos of the show's four main cast members. Sofia Rosinsky will star as Mac Coyle, a loner who becomes the leader of the Paper Girls; Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, an only child with big plans for her future; Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng, a dutiful daughter who feels caught between two worlds; and Fina Strazza as KJ Brandman, who "doesn’t need the paper-delivery job, but it makes her feel free."

Paper Girls follows four 12-year-old paper delivery girls (Erin, MacKenzie, KJ and Tiffany) who, on the morning after Halloween in 1988, become caught in a conflict between two warring groups of time travelers while on their delivery route. Now caught up in the conflict, the girls travel to the past, present and future (encountering future versions of themselves along the way) in an attempt to save the world. Like the comics, the television series will be set in the fictional Ohio suburb of Stony Stream. First published by Image Comics in 2015, Paper Girls concluded its run in 2019 with its 30th and final issue.
