Let's Talk: Satoshi Fumi

Tokyo-based DJ, producer, and sound designer Satoshi Fumi makes a return to John Digweed’s prestigious Bedrock Records imprint for the release of his new Mysterious Phenomenon LP.

The album delivers a straight forward collection of experimental and dreamy electronica productions, for what is one of his most impressive outings to date.

Previous releases from the Japanese artist have seen him on other leading electronic labels, with the likes of Get Physical, Yoshitoshi, and Mood Music all amongst the existing Satoshi Fumi catalogue.

We spoke to Satoshi for our latest edition of Let’s Talk, where we got to ask him all about the new long player, how the album centres around a theme, and what goals he has set himself for the coming year.

Hey Satoshi, we hope you’re well. How are things going over in Tokyo right now?

Hello! Tokyo is in the same situation as many other cities all around the world. We are keeping the economy going, aiming to stay safe, and fighting COVID.

You recently returned to John Digweed’s Bedrock imprint for the release of your new Mysterious Phenomenon LP, what inspired the initial idea for the album?

I thought about the phrase “The beautiful moments in a usual life”. I made all of the tracks featured on the album as electronica records based around this thought and idea.

Which track from the album do you think best represents that idea, and why?

It’s a tough question to answer as they all stem from this idea, potentially ‘Bamboo Forest’, ‘Air Castle’, or ‘Drop Of Rain’.

It’s pretty common for albums to get some remixes a few months after release, is that something you and Bedrock have coming?

I don’t actually know whether there are any plans for remixes in the future, you would have to ask John and the label!

Previously we have seen you release music on labels such as Mood Music, Yoshitoshi, and Get Physical, which other labels might we see you release with in 2022?

I have some plans confirmed and releases scheduled, which will see me releasing new music across the year on some quality labels. However, I unfortunately can’t tell you any more than that right now.

Have you set any New Year resolutions for yourself?

This year my focus will be on exploring new tastes, ideas, and sounds within my work.

What advice would you give to any artists that are considering to produce their first album?

To challenge yourself and your skills, and find your originality in the process.

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, is there anything else you would like to mention before we go?

Thank you so much for your support, and please keep checking out my stuff in the future.
