Scarlett Cole

Four-time RITA finalist, Scarlett Cole, is a contemporary romantic suspense / contemporary romance author (represented by Louise Fury at The Bent Agency) who calls both Toronto, Canada and Manchester, England home. A born city dweller, she periodically quashes the urge to live in the country by hiking up a mountain to remind herself that living away from people would terrify the pants off her.

She believes everybody deserves their love story to be told and loves her heroes on the rough and rugged side…and usually tall (because she married one of those 6ft 6” men you read about in romance!). She’s an A-type personality and Scorpio star sign, so good luck getting her to do anything she doesn’t want to.

When she isn’t writing, she’s happy to talk hot men and expensive shoes while drinking a cold gin and tonic. Don’t bring up olives. As far as Scarlett is concerned, they are the devil’s food. As long as you don’t bring up olives, she’s happy to hear from any time.

I’m not new to Scarlett Cole, but I haven’t been this impressed with her character and story development in a while. Don’t get me wrong, I’d recommend anything she has every written, but this story gave me Harper & Trent vibes and my heart soared! You see, Harper & Trent is how I met Scarlett and their book blew my ever-loving mind in 2015. I’ve been a devout believer since. Luke & Willow’s story made me feel all the things just as Harper & Trent's had so many years ago and how a story makes you feel is one of the most important aspects of a story. You may not remember details of a certain book years from the time you read it, but that feeling deep in your soul for the character’s highs and lows, triumphs and losses, and overall journey or path will stick with you. That’s the real power in a good story. This story will stay with me.

Scarlett Cole has always impressed me with her storylines because she doesn’t shy away from real life circumstances and their aftermath. She also almost never feeds you a story of gumdrops and rainbows but rather a cloudy story with rainbows peeking out that sometimes shoot out gumdrops :) I like realistic fiction. Not just like, but I prefer it. I prefer to read flawed characters that grow and develop as their HEA journey grows and develops. I also enjoy authors who do their due diligence with the aspects of the story they decide to infuse in the storyline and their characters. Scarlet has never missed a beat with this. Never.

Willow and Luke not only grow as individuals but also as a couple and that made this story that much more captivating for me. As much emotion this story carried, I was still able to read it in one sitting. Some of you might not and that’s okay because there’s a whole lot of #RealLife happening in this story and sometimes, you just gotta take a break. Just know that every plot point has a purpose and there is a rainbow at the end :)

TW: drug use bordering on addiction, accidental pregnancy, grooming/sexual assault (prior/retelling), parental neglect, parental gas lighting (prior/retelling)

Anyone who reads my reviews knows I’m not a fan of angst and there are very few authors I read regularly that write quite a bit of angst into their books and Scarlett Cole is one and she almost did me in with How Good It Was. I did enjoy this book quite a lot, but I’ll also admit there were so many times when the angst factor got to me and I had to put the book down and step away something I really don’t like to do. The book contains one of my favorite tropes though I’m not sure it’s an actual trope but it should be. The one night stand that comes back to bite the characters in the a$$ trope; there are many ways this trope plays out and this was an oops pregnancy between a former child star turned online influencer and a drummer for a rock band who are on the brink of stardom and got there because she used their music in a break-up video. These are two very different people who grew up in very different ways, but in reality they really are quite alike and their love story was intense.

Luke knew the minute he saw Willow at a concert he was going to have her and have her he did, but even he will admit the night was a special one. When Willow turns up on his doorstep ten weeks later, pregnant and needing a place to stay he agrees but he makes it quite clear he isn’t ready to be a father or in a relationship, but Willow needs his help to protect her reputation and the brands she is an influencer for and when she offers Luke one million dollars to pretend to be her boyfriend for a year under a very strict contract he signs it in order for her to realize he isn’t going to screw her over like her Dad and the people he employs on her behalf.

Right off the bat Luke was kind of a jerk to Willow about the pregnancy and the baby and it took me a good, long while to forgive him for that. I understood he had issues stemming from his father’s death and his mother’s abandonment of him and his sister leaving him to raise her when he was no more than a child himself, but that didn’t give him an excuse to make Willow feel like crap especially given that she left her home in California and flew to England to get away from the family who had been screwing her over for years and she had basically no one but him to confide in.

I’ll also admit Willow grated a bit on my nerves at first with her influencer brain and needing to set the stage for everything to be perfect, but she soon began to see that life wasn’t like that and I liked the changes she began to make and the difference in her attitude. She was so goal oriented and organized and at 23 she really seemed to have a decent hold on running her own empire despite how much her father had pushed her into certain things. Luke struggled a lot in this book, not only because things with the band were heating up and his life was changing rapidly on that front, but the fact he was going to be a dad was bringing up so many feelings from his past and he didn’t know how to deal with them. I liked that he realized he could talk to Willow about anything and she would listen and didn’t judge and he did the same for her, they truly built trust and friendship which only made their transition into being more fairly easy as they already knew they had chemistry.

What really impressed me was the way the band rallied around Luke when they realized he was having panic attacks and how they convinced him to seek therapy. Anytime an author writes therapy into a story I want to give them a hug and thank them because often times is so obvious when a character needs therapy, but most often they don’t get it.

Watching both Willow and Luke grow throughout this story is what kept me intrigued, at every step they were progressing not only as a couple but as individuals. Willow gained so much confidence once she had a support system she knew had her back (Luke, the rest of the band, their significant others, a few other close friends, and of course, Gran) and she began to truly understand what it was like to have love in her life. Luke figured out that no one is perfect, even his late father he measured everyone by was not a perfect man. He began to see that what he accomplished as a teenager taking care of his younger sister was quite a feat for someone his age and that he was actually quite good at it. He also realized he was worthy on love and capable of giving it.

How Good It Was contained quite a bit more angst than I enjoy, yet it was still a very good story, and contained some good messages about life and love. Scarlett Cole is a gifted writer who sometimes pushes me to my limits, but she always pulls me back in with her fully developed characters, her intricate plots, and all the emotion her words invoke.

I really enjoy this series which follows the English rock band ‘Sad Fridays’ which consists of Matt, Jase, Luke, Alex and Ben. Their lives are changing rapidly, we get to see how their dream of becoming a successful band finally comes true and we also see how they find love along the way. With each book I’m falling more and more in love with these characters. The third book ‘How good it was’ is the love story of drummer Luke Bryson and social media influencer Willow Warner and is another great addition to the series. You really have to start this series from the beginning. That will give you a better insight into the interaction between the band members, their past and their emotions.

Due to certain circumstances, Luke became responsible for his younger sister Izabel early on, something that has had a huge impact on him. Now that that responsibility is gone, he has the freedom to do what he wants but insecurity and dark emotions make that Luke’s losing himself more and more into drugs and women. He distances himself from his friends and sister. They are worried about him. So the news that Willow is pregnant with his child, after an one-night stand, comes as a huge shock to Luke and forces him to rethink his present, past and future. Willow has always been the perfect good girl, until that one night in Detroit where she did something wild, she spend the night with a hot rockstar. Never expecting to become pregnant, now she doesn’t only have to convince the father that he has to help her to save her career as a social media influencer but she also have to stand up to her father who is also her manager. Can she trust Luke to help her? Will it be possible to build a new life in new country and can she break free from her controlling family? Or will Luke be another person to break her trust and heart?

I was really curious about Luke’s story. Not only because the main characters Willow and Luke were complete opposite from each other (so I was really wondering how they would make a relationship work between them) but also because I knew from the previous story that Luke had a lot of issues so I wasn’t sure if he was ready for a relationship and/or fatherhood. It took me a little bit to really get into the story but once I connected with the story and more especially with Luke, I was really emotionally connected to it.

The story was told in both POV’s The writer Scarlett Cole did a wonderful job of convincing me that Luke and Willow belonged together, yes their journey wasn’t always easy but they worked both really hard not only on themselves but also on their relationship. They did it each in their own way, what worked best for their personality and problems. I really liked that. Luke changed from a manwhore into a man Willow could count on. Willow and Luke were always honest with each other and supported each other through good times and bad. Just like the secondary characters, in this story you could really feel the strong bond between the guys and the girls. It was so wonderful to see how they all supported Luke and Willow in bad times. You could really feel the love and deep friendship between them all. In this story we also got to see how it is to be a popular influencer, the hard work, the pressure of always being perfect and the manipulations of pictures to make ‘life’ more beautiful and ‘fake’. Willow grew from an innocent, somewhat naïve girl to a mature, confident woman and that also changed her perspective as an influencer. It made her more honest and less fake. I found it very fascinating. And Luke changed from a manwhore into a man Willow could count on.

‘How good it was’ is a story about self-discovery, forgiveness, healing and growing.

I’m really looking forward to the next story that will about Zoe and Alex.

Another winner by this author! I had a hard time putting it down, just be prepared for some frustration, and other emotions to surface. The author has written the characters of Willow and Luke so well, and to watch them grow while working through unchartered territory had me turning pages just to see what happens next. Willows’s strength and Luke’s hard work to change his ways make for an amazing read. But it is the family they have created that makes the whole thing work.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

4.5 stars!

I have been so excited for this book, the moment it appeared on my kindle I dropped everything to read it, and I loved it so much! Sexy, intense, dramatic, fun and gorgeously romantic, it’s a beautifully emotional surprise pregnancy/fake romance love story, and a fantastic addition to the series.

Luke is the drummer for the Sad Fridays. The boys have just hit the big time thanks to one of their songs featuring in a video by former child star and social media darling, Willow Warner, and Luke is riding the high of their success, fully embracing the ‘sex, drugs and rock-and-roll’ lifestyle. They are recording their first album when Willow meets the boys, and when sparks fly between her and Luke, they agree to spend the night together for no-strings, no-holds-barred sex.

“I feel like I’ve never had mind-blowing sex.”
“You want the kind of sex that leaves you breathless and sweaty and hanging halfway off the bed. The kind of sex where you fight to get closer or deeper. No matter how hard you try, you want more. Within minutes of it being over, you can’t wait to do it again. You want to feel stripped down raw, like your soul has been ripped out of your chest.” Luke put his forefinger beneath her chin and tipped her face to his.
“Yes,” she whispered. “For once, I want to feel like that.”
The elevator pinged and the door opened. “What room?”
She held out the key card to him. “Don’t hurt me.”
“I won’t. I promise.”

Holy freaking hotness, the chemistry between these two is electric, and Luke is a freaking sex god – while still being a good guy at heart, which I loved. The beginning of this book had me fanning myself at the steam between Luke and Willow, but then they go their separate ways, not expecting to see each other again… until Willow shows up in Manchester 10 weeks later to let Luke know that shes pregnant.

As if that wasn’t enough of a set-up, things take a bit of a twist when, in an effort to keep her squeaky-clean reputation and save her online career, Willow begs Luke to pretend to be in a relationship with her for the next 12 months so the world thinks they’re in love, and she didn’t just get knocked up from a one-night stand, and she’ll give him $1million for his trouble. For a man who has struggled his whole life, that’s a gobsmacking amount of money, but beneath his party-boy exterior, he is a guy with a huge heart who has always taken care of the people in his life, and that now includes Willow, so he’s on board to help her however he can – even without the money.

Things are a bit complicated initially, because while Luke is coming to terms with the news and the big changes that are coming his way, Willow is busy setting up the illusion of their perfect life. It’s an interesting dynamic. Luke is real, raw and honest, and that doesn’t mesh well with Willow’s near-obsession with creating the perfect image and posting the perfect content. I’ve gotta admit, I found Willow to be a bit much at first, but there’s so much more to her than we initially know, and as the story goes on I found myself really feeling for her, and appreciating the depth of her character and why she is the way she is.

“It’s weird that online, a place that doesn’t really exist, is the only place I feel like I actually belong or where people actually want me.”

And the same is true of Luke. In all honesty, he’s been a bit of an asshole in the previous books, so getting the opportunity to get inside of his head and learn more about him was fantastic. His backstory is tragic and explains so much about him, and his struggle to deal with the pain of his past and the sudden and dramatic changes in his life have left him confused and hurting. He’s damaged, but trying to do the right thing, and their agreement confuses everything to the point where he doesn’t really have any idea of where he stands.

“It’s weird to see a version of yourself play out on video that isn’t really who you are. If it was real, it would be an amazing video, Will. Truly. But it’s not. And it feels duplicitous. I’m confused by it.”

Despite their fake relationship, I loved the honestly between Luke and Willow. They slowly get to know each other, they talk about their lives, and there’s a genuine affection between them. The lines are blurry from the very beginning, and as intense as their chemistry is, the romance feels like a slow burn, and I loved watching things shift and change for them.

“I could lose myself in you, Will.”
… “I’m pretty certain we aren’t losing ourselves, Luke. I think we are finding ourselves.”

In order to have a future together, they both have issues that they need to deal with, and that is a dramatic journey. But they have each other’s backs, and all of the drama and emotion plays out alongside their developing romance which is sexy and intense, and so freaking swoony.

“It’s because of you and this that my world is changing. And whatever it looks like at the end, if you aren’t there, then I don’t want it.”

Luke completely owned my heart in this book. He’s so damaged, and yeah, he’s been a dick to his friends and family, but he’s lost and hurting, and Willow and their baby coming into his life is the trigger he needs to sort himself out, and what a ride that is for him. And as he falls hard for her, he is a beautiful romantic hero who holds nothing back from his girl, and I loved that!

“I’ll slay any dragons for you, Will. Even my own. I promise you.”

And I really enjoyed getting to know Willow. She has her moments where she appears shallow and self-absorbed, but this book is a real journey for her, and the more we get to know her, the more I could understand her, and the changes in her and the way she began to find herself were really well written.

There’s a lot for these two to work through and it’s dramatic, and a little bit angsty at times, but the romance is beautiful, the character development is well written, and I loved watching Luke and Willow find their way forward together.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever really been anyone’s, but I’m yours.”

The rest of the Sad Fridays and their girls are a big part of the story of course, and I loved catching up with them. The relationships between the boys continue to develop as their lives completely change, and I loved seeing them continue to be there for each other, and stay true to themselves, even with of the massive upheavals they are dealing with.

This is a fantastic addition to the series. It’s a gorgeous story for Luke and Willow, and though it finished way before I wanted it to, I can’t wait to see more of them in future books.

I loved this one!

I loved this book!! I loved the characters. Even though I read the previous books in series I had forgotten much about them but this reads fine as a standalone.

I like how they meet. I love England. I had not been to Manchester (yet) but still I loved all the ways to say bun and all the tea that cures everything.

I liked how we read about the rock group moving through the process of getting their record out and getting ready for their tour

I really loved the growth in Luke. Willow was fantastic. I loved how she handled her troubles with smart decisions such as taking on her father, her pregnancy, and how she took care of Luke.

One of my favorites so far this year. Alex and Zoey in May!!!!

4.5 stars of whirlwind emotion

This is the third in the series, and I really would implore you to read them in order, as otherwise you really will miss significant elements of the story, and also of the culture in Manchester where much of this is set. If you don't and find yourself lost, please go back and start at the beginning – the story deserves your time.

Luke has been skirting on the edge of rage and addiction for a while, and one might say living his worst best life, or best worst life. The band suddenly making it big has not necessarily all been good, and Luke has been somewhat untethered for a while.

So, when Willow, the person whose use of their music on her video gave them their chance, turns up and reveals their one night of abandon has resulted in a pregnancy, he has to face some big challenges.

I love that we get to see both their viewpoints and that in the most part they are pretty honest with each other, or intuitive enough to get to the bottom of some very longstanding and serious issues. Luke makes some pretty big leaps into a world of revisiting events and getting the situation straighter, helped in no small part by his very best friends and bandmates. It is lovely to see the emotional maturity gained by both Matt and Jase help Luke slowly develop some understanding of Willow's situation, and more especially his feelings about her.

Always with a side of Mancunian rough realism, the evolution of the band, the guys, and their relationships is a pleasure to watch and no story in this series would be complete without the wisdom (and sandwiches) of Nan.

I cannot wait for the next installment!

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
Luke and Willow aren’t my favourite of Scarlett Cole’s couples, but I’m really loving the way this series follows the Sad Fridays from unknown grafters in the first book to the stadium filling band in this third book.

The complicated relationships between the band members, their families, and their partners are the best parts of this book. The band has grown up – and they’ve grown together. This book builds on the themes of forgiveness and reconciliation that started in the second book. I love the way the band holds close to family and Manchester, even as they become household names.

In some ways, Luke’s romance with Willow works well. The Luke we met in previous books would never have let himself get tied down without an earth-shattering catalyst. I’m just not sure that Willow’s character really fits into this series. Willow does have a growth arc, but the American actor/influencer feels far too shallow, vain, and needy for me to really engage with. Cole usually writes about strong, interesting women. In contrast, Willow is unbearable at the start of the book and somewhat likeable by the end.

Beyond Luke and Willow, I’m loving this series and I look forward to the next book.

Luke Bryson the drummer of the Sad Friday's was on a spiral of self destructive behavior. Willow Warner was everyone's favorite social media influencer, yet struggled with who she wanted to be and who everyone thought she was. When a one night stand came back with a positive pregnancy test priorities changed. A deal to stay together for a year and then go their separate ways seemed like a simple solution until it wasn't .

This was a slow build up romance focusing not only on the main characters as a couple but individually. There was lots of introspection and dealing with personal baggage making this an extremely personal and emotional read. Luke and Willow had more in common than what people might see at first glance. Both were sensitive individuals muddling through mountains of hurt and dealing with parents who put their own interest before their children’s. How do you stand up for yourself when the very people who are supposed to take care of you take advantage of you? While Luke and Willow dealt with their hurt differently they did share a pain that held them captive. Luke's need to make sure everyone important to him was taken care of at the expense of his own happiness and Willow's compliance to the detriment of her happiness served as a bond for them. Both these characters held unrealistic expectations on their shoulders and it was not until they dealt with their burdens that they realized how damaging they were to themselves. Their recognition of each other's pain and the friendship and support that developed between them was as encouraging as it was heartbreaking. There was no shortage of poignant revelations and emotional moments in this work. This pair's physical connection was as steamy as their personal connection was touching.

Scarlett Cole excels at capturing heart-clenching moments, the ones that go to that place where her portrayals struggle with their inner fears and insecurities. Each of this author's books demonstrates a wide scope of understanding of her characters causing them to practically jump off the pages and making her stories richer because of this. How Good It Was shows just how good Scarlett Cole is as a writer, a definite must read!

Started this series because this is the book I really wanted to read. I love me a pregnancy trope. It didn't disappoint. There were some things I didn't like but overall it was a great read.

There are some content warnings for the book (and the others) in that they all do cocaine, however unlike the one rocker romance book I read that involved drug use and that I highly disliked because it was the actual focus on the story, it is not the case with this series. It is actually about the couple and what they go through. Also of note, he quits it (a little too easily) but he does it because Willow asks him too. Another thing is they deal with mental health in this one and while I'm not a therapist I thought it was done well. It really helped Luke grow and showed his willingness to want to make things work with Willow.

Overall, a great read and I look forward to the rest of the books in the series.

Random Thoughts:

❥ Willow's parents are awful and I hate all she went thru with them

💙 Love Luke's support of her along with the rest of the band

❥ Luke's mom was no day at the beach either

❥ And her so called "best friend" Riley?

❥ Trash

💙 And Nan was a Queen in how she told off Riley

💙 Luke hates social media but does it for Willow

💙 He legit calls himself on his social media page #willowsdilf and it is absolutely adorable

💙 Super sexy times

💙 He finds her pregnancy hot and it so cute

💙 When the truth behind their story comes out he who hates social media, made me swoon.

💚4.5 FLOWER STARS🎶

My favorite up and coming band out of Manchester, UK- “Sad Friday’s” are back!
This time around they come to us with an accidental pregnancy/fake relationship romance that was full of unexpected sweetness!

Willow is a social media darling who helped the band get a big break into the public eye. She and drummer, Luke shared a night of hot, uninhibited sex. They went their separate ways, no expectations.
10 weeks later Willow travels from Los Angeles to the UK and knocks on Luke’s door(who’s living the cliché rock and roller lifestyle) and gives him the life changing news…Baby on board!
The accidental pregnancy trope isn’t a favorite of mine, in this story it really worked for me and I found myself feeling the warm fuzzies and swooning over Luke big time.
I didn’t expect Luke to affect me the way he did and for him to be so surprising in the best ways.

Both these characters have something major in common that makes them put up emotional walls and it’s also what makes them understand each other.
In my opinion it makes them perfect for each other. Simpatico♥️
They both have similar feelings of never being someone’s first choice, not being “enough” to be loved and special.
It’s an extremely relatable feeling and I really connected a lot with them because of this aspect.
Some of the quotes I highlighted from them made me tear up and tugged at my heart.
It’s written so well and it’s utterly heart wrenching.
The emotional trek Willow and Luke go on in this story is so evenly paced and wonderful.
The characters are written so intelligently, I felt it really explored their emotions and the issues they are struggling with well.
The story has relevant and realistic life situations and was still such an entertaining, fun read.
The secondary characters are amazing as usual, I love this series and feel like I know the characters.
They bring a lot of warmth to the story.
There’s laughs and banter to lighten things up. The humor is fantastic, I laughed out loud quite a few times.

The chemistry between the characters is really intense, hot and sexy, the connection they have is unconventionally romantic.

Both are such sympathetic characters, they haven’t had it easy, they both do for everyone else first.
I love the way they slay emotional demons for each other. They are a great team!

The captivating journey of how the characters adapt, grow and flourish is the beauty of this story. I loved it!

***5 Stars***

This book definitely took me on a roller coaster of a ride because this one had its moments where I wanted to toss the Kindle into the freezer (this option replaces throwing it against a wall). But, it also kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next and, in the end, every frustrating, sweet, funny, heartbreaking moment was worth it.

Willow and Luke. I ended up loving them both, but boy did they try me, especially in the first half of the book. I was already iffy about Luke (okay, he was my least fav of the band going in) and while I liked Willow and totally empathized with all that she was dealing with, there were things she did that rubbed me the wrong way. But as I got further into their story, I realized that they both had a lot of growing to do. They were both stuck and couldn’t see beyond the ends of their noses. So watching as they figured out what they wanted ~ not only from themselves, but each other and those around them ~ was pretty amazing and in the end I loved how things worked out for them.

This was another great read and addition to the series. It does address the good and bad of social media as well as mental health issues in general and substance abuse, but all of it is done well and was necessary for the growth of both characters. But what really bumped this book up for me in the enjoyment factor was getting to hang out with the Sad Friday crew. From Nan, to Matt, Iz, Jase (whom is STILL my fav) and Cerys, Ben, Chaya, Pat to Alex and Zoe, these characters have really grown on me and I love simply hanging out with them. Alex and Zoe are up next and the chopping block and I cannot wait to get my hands on their book!

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Luke and Willow aren’t my favourite of Scarlett Cole’s couples, but I’m really loving the way this series follows the Sad Fridays from unknown grafters in the first book to the stadium filling band in this third book.

The complicated relationships between the band members, their families and their partners are the best parts of this book. The band has grown up - and they’ve grown together.

Willow does have a growth arc but the American actor/influencer feels far too shallow, vain and needy for me to really engage with. Cole usually writes about strong, interesting women. In contrast, Willow is unbearable at the start of the book and somewhat likeable by the end.

Beyond Luke and Willow, I’m loving this series and I look forward to the next book.

Note: An ARC was provided by Wildfire Marketing Solutions.

I admit it. I'm a sucker for Scarlett Cole's books, but can you really blame me? I mean, her characters and stories grab a hold of my heart and refuse to let go. Latest case in point: Luke and Willow's story. Gah! These two were irresistibly endearing, and while they don't necessarily have the sort of meet-cute that's GP-rated and super swoony, they've got an undeniable connection. I liked that they had their struggles and that they needed to work towards creating a relationship as a couple because it made the journey towards their happy ending far more worthwhile and gives me a better appreciation for them. I seriously wanted to hug them both, especially given that their back stories regarding their respective families were not easy. Seeing how far Luke has come here from the Luke that we had in the first two books has me bumping him up to my favorite among the Sad Fridays guys--sorry, Matt, Jase, Alex, and Ben!--but we've still got two books to go, so you never know. Awe-inspiring character and story development has me giving five-plus stars to How Good It Was.

4 Stars!

Scarlett Cole is back with the third book in the Excess All Areas series and y'all I was here for all the words in this beauty and all the feels that Willow and Luke gave me. What a journey.

How Good It Was was all kinds of good y'all. Steamy, intense, emotional in moments, a fast read that'll hook you early on, and whoaaaa. Scarlett did an amazing job giving her own flair and twist to this book.

That blurb might have hooked me at first but the words and characters hooked me cover to cover (looooved these two!!). I hate I missed the book before this one (looooved book one in this series!) but I'll be rectifying that super soon.

I definitely recommend this book.

I'm so glad I picked this up. I forgot how much I enjoy Scarlett Cole's writing. She does an outstanding job with relationships. Not just the romantic couple, but the relationships between the rest of the characters. Watching Luke get his life together and deal with his feelings toward his friend and band mates who he felt betrayed him was awesome. And watching Willow fall in love and get her own life in order was equally as good.

While this is book 3, you could definitely start here. But trust me when I say you want to start at the beginning of the series.

Readers rejoice as British rockstars, Sad Fridays, are back in this angsty contemporary romance of a one-night stand that leads to big changes for two people weighed down by their pasts as they find an unexpected connection that changes their lives irrevocably. When drummer Luke Bryson has an unforgettable night with "family friendly" media influencer Willow Warner they end up putting on the ultimate show as they try to salvage her career while he deals with all the excesses of fame seeking to pull him under as his band continues their meteoric rise. It's ultimately a journey full of angst, heartfelt moments, and a slow burn teeming with sexual tension as they get to know each other behind the images they show to the world. From start to finish it's a story that pulls you in, never letting you go until the very end...and an epilogue that has me greatly anticipating the next installment in this series.

Luke is a bit of a jerk when readers first meet him, fully embracing the "sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll" lifestyle to hide from a painful past where he never felt he was important or put first. His father's death led to him taking on the role of caretaker at a young age and it's a weight that he's been rebelling from ever since. To escape that weight he fully embraces the rockstar vices as a man who does coke, drinks to numbness, and flits from one groupie after another. Meeting the wholesome Willow catches him off-guard though as she's nothing like the women he's been with before. Their one night together has him being real for the first time, being honest about his life, which leads to lots of steam and heart and soul. When she shows up on his doorstep two months later, announcing her pregnancy and an offer she doesn't think he'll refuse, he's once again caught off-guard in a journey that reveals a much softer side to him. Luke may act tough and uncaring at the start, but being with Willow shows him to be a protective man. It brings out a gentlemanly side full of respect, someone who doesn't think he'd be a good husband and father, but who easily embraces all those qualities. I came to adore Luke, found him to be endearing and someone who I endlessly wanted to hug to prove to him he was always deserving of being first.

Willow was another individual bruised by her past as a childhood star. For years she made money, money that unbeknownst to her was being stolen by her parents. Throughout her youth she had to deal with issues over her looks, and being the good girl, and with getting older she switched to social media where she became a top influencer. The moment she spotlighted a song from Brit band Sad Fridays on her site was a life-altering event for both the band and Willow, opening up her eyes to painful truths while giving her a needed push to break free from the chains those around her placed on her. A one-night stand with Luke was supposed to be just one night, but her becoming pregnant and going to legal war with her parents and advisers has her going to Luke and making him an unconventional offer. It's an offer that changes everything for them, makes them stronger as individuals, and has them growing closer together as they reveal more of themselves to the other. Willow may start off as the quiet and perfectly packaged media star, but as the story progresses a stronger and more assertive side emerges. Her and Luke become a formidable pair, an unconventional family of their own making, one that I rooted for from the first page to the last.

This was an intensely emotional tale, one that depicted the dark and painful price of fame. Hiding from painful pasts is what brought these two very different people together, had them making beautiful music together in a relationship that might have started out as fake, but soon became all too real as they showed their true selves to each other. Their connection was instantaneous but grew slowly to become even more richly rewarding. Surrounding this memorable main couple were the other members of Sad Fridays and it warmed my heart seeing the boys work through their issues here. Along with intense emotions, steamy encounters, and hard truths, readers got bits of humor courtesy of Nan. Throughout the series she's been a bright spot amidst the heavy moments and I adored her and look forward to seeing more of her as well as the rest of the band in the next installment. On a whole this was another winner from Ms. Cole, another sensual and emotional tale that pulled at my heartstrings, and I definitely recommend it to fans of rockstar romances and opposites attracting. After the turn of the final page I'm now left impatiently waiting for the next book in the Excess All Areas series!

I adore Scarlett Coles books and this one is no exception. This is the third book in the Excess All Areas series about an up and coming rock band, Sad Fridays. This time out Luke is the hero. He’s the older brother of Isabel from the first book and drummer for the band. We learn at the end of the previous book he had one glorious night with Willow, the heroine of this book and the young woman who played a major role in the change in fortune for Sad Friday’s. It’s now 10 weeks later, the band is back home in Manchester getting ready for the release of their first album and tour and Willow makes a surprise appearance with a surprise announcement.

Seems there was something left behind after Luke and Willow’s night together and I think you can guess what it might be. Willow is a planner and she has come up with a plan. She wants Luke to pretend to be her fiance until she gives birth and then she will say things didn’t work out and she and the baby will head back to the US. You see, she’s a very popular social influencer and her whole career would be ruined unless she’s very careful with her planning. Now I admit I don’t get the whole social influencer thing, though of course I know they’re a big thing these days but I just went with it figuring it’s just my advanced age. And that’s not all she’s dealing with. Her father has been her manager for years when she was very young and starred on her own TV series (think Disney Channel) before moving on to movies. And the whole time he’s been using her for her money and stealing from her. She’s only recently found this out and is determined to make him make things right. She wants Luke to sign a contract now that she’s been betrayed by those who should have watched out for her.

Luke is somewhat flummoxed by all this. While he’s not opposed, after all it’s his baby too, he’s not ready to jump on board right from the start. And rightfully so. His entire life is about to change and as we read more about him, he has a lot of his own baggage he has to deal with. He’s been living a wild lifestyle up until now, lots of women and partying, including some drug use and he has enough self awareness to realize if he agrees to go along with Willow, he will have to do a 180 change in the way he’s been living.

But he agrees and she moves in together. And it’s so very touching to see real love develop between the two of them. He fully supports her in her “influencer” lifestyle even though he doesn’t get it and doesn’t really want to go along with it. And the closer they get, the more the ghosts of his past come back to haunt him. Luke is such a wonderful, supportive, fantastic hero and he’s the kind I fall in love with.

Willow is a little tougher to love at first but I certainly like and appreciate her from the beginning. She’s savvy, she’s brave and she’s had a sad and rather isolated life so far which makes her family’s betrayal even sadder. I think again it’s my age and just not getting the social influencer thing that makes it a bit slower for me to fall for her right from the start.

Another thing I truly appreciate is all the conflict in the book comes from the outside. There is no misunderstandings between Luke and Willow. They talk things through if anything comes up and I love this about the two of them.

Something else I truly loved about this book and was unexpected is the issues I had with the first book were dealt with. This really lifted the story higher for me.

I also like the genesis of the band. It’s like we are with them from the beginning. Well, actually that’s because we are 😁. We get to see how close they all are as friends first and then band mates.

The next book comes out in 22 days and I like we don’t have long to wait. This is a book and a series I am loving so much and urge everyone to read. It’s wonderful.

How Good It Was by new to me author Scarlett Cole follows the story of Luke Bryson and Willow Warner. And just so happens to be the third book in the Excess All Areas series.

Upon reading the blurb the story had me hooked, wanting and needing to read it ASAP! Mostly because of my love for Rockstar Romance and also Surprise Pregnancy trope.
The story follows Sad Fridays band member Luke Bryson and influencer Willow Warner in what is meant to be a one night stand. However it turns into a crazy, packed rollercoaster ride when that night becomes so much more the result equalling a surprise pregnancy.
With two famous figures in their own rights given their careers, there journey ultimately paves way for a somewhat complex one.
From the twists and turns that Scarlett had occurring within the narrative, it leads Willow and Luke following what needs to be done in order for both to try and stay on the straight and narrow. All whilst juggling the obstacles and hurdles that are constantly thrown their way in what becomes a hectic and turbulent path that is their lives.
And that's not including all the emotions and feelings that come pouring out, especially when it comes to the sensitive subject matters that are brought to light.
Ultimately making their journey non stop go, go, go with all that goes on all throughout.

While there some major differences between the characters of Willow and Luke. Whether they saw or believed it, they were similar with having gone through some experiences that were the same. Ultimately leaving them with the end results of an exact duplicate, being love deprived. The fact that everyone else in their lives always seemed to choose others before them, while they would always put everyone before their own.

Although the story had a good strong plot to it overall, unfortunately that didn’t stop it from making me lose interest at times.
The main factor was the story being told through the 3rd person, something that was unexpected and ultimately ended up being the biggest let down for me. Especially with not being a fan of books that are told from the 3rd person POVs. It just didn't allow me to grip onto the story as per my usual, which is why my attention waned a lot throughout and lead me to taking over 3 days just to finish the story. Something that is a rare occurrence for me.

Overall, with How Good It was being my first read by Scarlett Cole she still did a good job with Willow and Luke’s story.
In fact it still has me looking forward to the next book in Excess All Areas series.

Luke Bryson is the drummer of Sad Fridays, an up and coming rock band from Manchester. They’re in Detroit recording their first album after one of their songs went viral thanks to a post by Willow Walker, an influencer.
Willow goes to meet them in Detroit and her connection with Luke is instantaneous. They have the most epic one night stand and when morning comes, Luke is gone and they carry on with their lives. Or so they think… two months later Willow shows up in Manchester bearing news, she’s pregnant and she needs Luke’s help to save her career. They agree to live together and pretend they’re a couple so she won’t loose sponsors and hence can save her online persona. Will they be able to fake it until they make it?

Oh my! Book 3 in the series and I’m in loveeeeee. Luke said something in the book that resonated with me and I think it sums up their relationship pretty well. Willow stuck with him when he was at his lowest (he was an addict, his life was out of control, spiraling down) and she gets to reap the benefits of his success now that because of her and their baby he wanted to step up his game and dealt with his demons to be the best version of himself he could be. It was amazing to see Luke’s transformation. Amazing! It made me love him so much more to see him owning his mistakes, making mends with friends and family. Mental health is as important as physical health! A strong hero takes care of himself too! Love, love, love it!
Believe or not, Willow is a very strong, independent woman who was just trying to do what she thought it was best for her and her baby. Her parents betrayed her big time and she does everything in her power to claim back what is rightfully hers. I loved seeing the behind the scenes of what’s like being an influencer, all the work that goes creating good content for so many different platforms. And of course I loved seeing Sad Fridays getting ready for their first proper tour! I’d so go to a concert if they were a band in real life! Loved seeing the band rallying up together to protect Luke and Willow. Jase is so in love with Cerys (book 2) and I loved seeing little snippets of the rest of the band mates!
Next will be Alex’s book and I cannot wait because Alex is not your regular type of guy. He’s very open minded and he’ll need an equally open minded partner.

I couldn’t wait to read this new Scarlett Cole’s book. I loved the previous one “Next time I fall” and I really wanted to know more about Luke. He wasn’t my favorite character since he seemed temperamental and a bit selfish but I wondered what was behind the mask. So I didn’t wait when I received the ARC and started to read immediately Luke and Willow’s story. Luke is in a hard place. He’s never happy and nothing seem to help to really dull the hurt he feels. Except for this one night with Willow Warner, a famous social media influencer. When Willow comes back in his life out of the blue telling him she’s pregnant and she needs him to help her save his career, Luke doesn’t know what to do. The contract is simple: pretending they are in a relationship for twelve months. He’ll earn one million dollars and will not be forced to be in the baby’s life if he doesn’t want to. But it’s not that easy and it could be the recipe for a disaster and a lot of hurt for both of them…
I really liked this book, even if at first I had a hard time getting attached to Luke and Willow. I found Willow a bit self-centered and naïve while Luke was too arrogant. But it changed when I read about their personal stories. It was really touching and helped me to have a better understanding about why they were acting like that. I loved their relationship and the way it changed along the story.
The subjects of this book are really interesting and important as well: how social media can give a false idea about someone, pairs and family’s expectations and the pressure that comes with it and many other thing. One of the main topic relate to something that happened quite recently on social medias.
I was happy to see the other characters as well since I love this band and their friends and family (maybe not all of them but most of them). I can’t wait to read the next book. It’s Alex’s story and he’s my favorite band’s member. I find him funny and intriguing so I really want to know more about him.
This book was great and I really recommend it (as well as the rest of the series and other Scarlett’s Cole books). It’s a very strong and touching romance with tough and important subject, and amazing characters and it deserved to be read!
(Sorry if there are some mistakes, English is not my first language).

How Good It Was is book three in Scarlett Cole’s Excess All Areas series and continues the story of the band Sad Fridays. This time we have the drummer Luke Bryson and the social influencer Willow Warner. Next Time I Fall #2 had left us with Luke shell-shocked over her pregnancy announcement and subsequent proposal to deal with their little problem. Now we find out what actually happened that night and the affect it had on them both.

Luke has been on a downhill spiral since his father died and his mother abandoned the family. He has struggled to bring up his sister and then had to cope with being betrayed by the Palmer brothers. Since the band’s rise to fame he has over indulged in sex, drugs and alcohol but he never expected his steamy one night stand in Detroit to have the consequences it has.

Willow had used one of the band’s songs on a social media post and it had gone viral. This helped the band get a record deal and enables her to use it to persuade Luke to help her out and save her career. She is a wholesome content creator so needs to keep that reputation and not lose sponsors. Their night together had meant so much to her because they had connected and enjoyed themselves. All her life she has been surrounded by people who want something from her but he’d just made her feel alive. She never expected to see him again but when her life fell apart she tracked him down and flew to Manchester. He became her exit plan when it came to light she had been betrayed and deceived, and then found out she was pregnant.

The dynamics of the band has been changing especially with Matt getting with Iz and Jase being with Cerys, leaving Luke feeling like an outsider in the group. Now he has to cope with Willow paying him to fake a relationship for a year plus becoming a father. The situation is not what either of them wanted especially as Luke is private guy and she lives her life on social media. He doesn’t know if he can deal with more responsibilities as it would mean giving up his addictions, the women and his dreams of travelling to help her out.

Things slowly change between them as she tells him about her childhood and problems with her family. She has been let down by everyone she trusted and he can relate to that. His past is as tragic as hers and I felt really sorry for him as he struggles with everything going on. He has always done the right thing by everyone so it feels strange to him to agree to the terms of her deal.

He feels a pull towards her but hates lying about their relationship especially when he such good memories of their night together. The attraction and affection slowly builds between them as they work through their issues and become exactly what they both need to turn their lives around for the better. Luckily the band are there to support Luke when it all starts to get too much and all the girls support and help Willow. They bring the fun into the story and give some great advice.

It is a very emotional story as both the couple have issues that have to be addressed and dealt with, as well as having their lives turned upside down by the pregnancy. Their journey is heart breaking but so romantic as they battle the past and find the solution for a happy future. I loved how strong Willow became and how she managed to stand up for what she wanted. Luke is a darling with a big heart so at times I just wanted to hug and tell him it would be all ok in the end.
A lovely ending for this couple and exciting news about one of the other couples. The epilogue sets the scene nicely for the next book as Alex decides to play matchmaker for Zoe so it will be interesting what that leads too!

I am absolutely loving this series by Scarlett Cole. How Good It Was is the third book in the Excess All Areas series, and I must admit to it being my favourite…. so far! We still have Alex and hopefully Ben’s stories to come.

What can I say about Luke? Luke is the band member that concerns me the most, and I desperately want to see him content. He has his struggles. He certainly hasn’t had an easy time over the years - having had responsibilities that he made many sacrifices for in order to do the best he could and what he felt was right. All of this and more has had an impact on his health, and I thought the author wrote his story perfectly. I was expecting to find it emotional…. and it was!

I adore Willow. This young woman has led an extraordinary life but how my heart hurt for her at times. I found her to be kind, caring, smart, loving and guarded – with good reason to be. I loved witnessing Willow’s thoughts and actions as this story unfolded. I was fascinated watching her work as I’m not technology savvy at all.

As you read Luke and Willow’s journey, you will see just how perfect they are for each other. I really would love to say more about this but I won’t as I want you to discover all the scenes that I am desperate to tell you about, for yourselves. Expect an emotional roller coaster ride!

I can’t not mention Nan. OMG, I want to be her when I grow older. To have someone like her in your life is both a pleasure and a privilege. She steals the show during the scenes she features in. What a wonderful woman she is!

There is so much that I will take away from Luke and Willow’s story. The situations that they both face make this novel unputdownable. I was able to visualise everything clearly as the descriptive narrative is perfectly penned. I highly recommend that you read the series in release order as each book continues Sad Fridays’ journey starting in One Day Like This, and I do feel that readers will benefit from having a greater understanding of the history of the band, and the relationships amongst the band members and other characters too.

I award How Good It Was 5 must-read stars. The epilogue gives us a taster of what to expect in Alex and Zoe's book and I cannot wait! In all honesty, I never want this series to end.

It’s time to dig out the Sad Friday’s band T-shirt and get your tickets for the tour because Scarlett Cole is back with the next book in the Excess All Areas series, Luke’s, and it’s a book you will read in one sitting and have ALL THE FEELS while reading it. I can’t express how much I loved this story! 5 stars is not enough.

OMG, this book wrecked me in a good way. I was hooked from the opening line to the very last that I read with a goofy grin and a need to get the next book as soon as humanly possible.

Fair warning, you will rock and roll from one emotion to another with this story of two broken souls who are bought together by the result of a one night stand but who find that the other is exactly who they need to feel complete.

If you’ve read the first two books in the series (and if you haven’t, fix that now) then you will know how hard Luke is on himself and how hard he lives his life. So when Willow shocks him with the last thing he ever expected it’s the start of an emotional journey that will leave you reaching for the tissues more than once and loving it.

I can’t not talk about WIllow. She is a character who I want to be my best friend, hug, cheer on and just reassure her that it will be all okay. She is the absolute perfect match for Luke. She is the light to his dark.

There was no chance that Luke and Willow won't fall and fall epically and I loved every emotion charged second of it. There are a few moments in this book that will leave you an emotional mess and it was needed to tell THIS story. It’s a tale of trust after all.

And for the fans of this series, yes Nan makes an appearance and absolutely steals her scenes. This book is a masterpiece, plain and simple. I can’t wait for more to see the band and the family they have created grow. Do yourself a favour and READ THIS SERIES!!!

It was supposed to be one night of letting loose, a night out from underneath the thumb of her overbearing family and away from her demanding life... but it wound costing far more than it was really worth. Now she finds herself expecting a child she had hoped wouldn't come until a few years from now, when she had a husband and home to go along with it... but sometimes life gives you blessings before your ready for them. Now she is at a loss as to what to do. Online she is the picture of perfection, a perfect representation for her family friendly sponsors, but becoming a mother after a one night stand with a rocker is sure to derail everything. Unless she can come up with a plan before the news breaks...

How Good It Was is an emotional journey of two people who suddenly find their lives turned upside-down by two little lines. Neither are ready to be parents, both having dreams to accomplish and care-free lives to live. But those two little lines change everything, now they are struggling with what to do, with what they mean to one another, and how this baby tie them together rather they want to be or not. It feels like an impossible situation at first, but once Willow shows up on Luke's doorstep things start to align, attraction takes hold, and unexpected feelings hit. It's evident that they have something special between them, but it takes them a while to come around to the idea of it. It's a slow, torturous journey... but so totally worth it!

I loved this newest offering in the series, it was passionate, dramatic, emotive, and heart-wrenching at times-- it's words left my heart feeling thoroughly squeezed! Highly recommend!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
