Omnipreneurship Awards 2021: Sustainability Branch

Omnipreneurship Awards: Sustainability Branch

Al-Dabbagh Group (ADG) together with Petrolube Oil Company has launched its second Grand Challenge, with the goal of identifying a technological solution to create a circular ecosystem across business unit’s areas of operations. Those who have a knack for stretching limits, thinking outside of the box and a desire to build a better world are invited to participate.

The Next Big Thing

ADG are always on the look-out for The Next Big Thing. It is one of the ten golden rules of Omnipreneurship. The Next Big Thing is based on the premise that one must always question the status-quo and seek new ways of looking at things. It is all about doing something faster, more efficiently and with the view of impacting as many people as possible.

The criteria for determining if your proposal is big enough to become The Next Big Thing for the Sustainability Branch Challenge are a set of questions we can ask ourselves:

  • Is it scalable? For a proposal to be The Next Big Thing it has to have the potential and ability to scale.
  • Is it sustainable? It has to have the power to attract support year after year.
  • Is it impactful? It is important that it has a tangible effect, whether solving a problem or changing perspectives on how things are done. It also has to be measurable to ensure that it is having the intended impact.
  • Is it cost-effective? The ability to minimize investment on the proposal, while maximizing return.
  • Is it game-changing? The proposal should disrupt the current ecosystem or model being used for the better.

Petrolube Oil Company (Petrolube Oil) is this year's Omnipreneurship Awards Grand Challenge Sponsor, and is seeking partners to solve the Used Vegetable Cooking Oils Challenge.

What is the Challenge?

Used Vegetable Cooking Oils for Biodegradable Lubricants

As a leading lubricant blending organization in Saudi Arabia with a goal to be pioneers in leading innovative sustainability solutions in the lubricants industry, Petrolube Oil is dedicated to contributing to a circular economy by looking for solutions, technologies and processes that will help to find an environmental-friendly second life for used vegetable cooking oil products in the lubricant industry.

Petrolube Oil is seeking re-processing / re-refining technologies for used vegetable cooking oils. The goal is to repurpose this feedstock into useful base oils that can be used in Lubricant formulations to add value to the core business. In a nutshell, Petrolube Oil would like used vegetable cooking oils to become of value to the company and to the environment. This would allow large (food) organizations to offset all the costs of disposal and eventually, it should generate a ‘green’ revenue for Petrolube Oil.

Fresh thinking about the uses and the value of the waste oil could lead to new business models or cost-effective solutions that will make the waste oil valuable and that would promote environmentally friendly reuse or re-refining of the generated waste oil streams.

The aim of this challenge is to find a solution that will process / re-refine used vegetable cooking oils into biodegradable lubricants in a cost-effective, commercially viable manner while mitigating the impact of lubricants on the global ecosystem.

Success Criteria

Petrolube Oil is looking for technological solutions which:

  • Process used vegetable cooking oils, ideally applicable to all used vegetable oils, into base oil for biodegradable lubricants
  • Address the impurities such as polymerized compounds, saponifiable triglycerides formed at high temperature, peroxide compounds, free fatty acid compounds formed due to breakage of large triglyceride molecules (preferably all)
  • Improve undesirable physical properties related to poor oxidation stability, poor low temperature properties and maintaining consistent chemical composition of the vegetable oils in order to meet final application and performance specifications
