Overload devices or rated capacity limiters (RCLs) fitted to most wire rope hoists measure only the load on the rope(s) or they use motor current in a load calculation. Measuring rope load does not detect if anything is impeding hoist drum or gear rotation and motor current can vary for external reasons.

The ZX hoist is equipped with a unique design of RCL in the form of a torque arm between the hoist gearbox and hoist frame. This senses the total load transmitted by the hoist mechanism, including load on the hook and any impedance of rotation. Examples of additional loads detected by the ZX RCL which are not detected by rope overloads include; brake release failure and certain types of gear or bearing damage.

The ZX RCL is also unaffected by fluctuations in the electrical power supply. Its operation is highly predictable and has been proven on tens of thousands of installations worldwide.
