Firefighters consider Montgó fire to be extinguished

Investigations have started to determine to cause of the blaze which affected some eight hectares of the Montgó slopes.

At 5.30pm on Tuesday 11th January, the Provincial Fire Brigade declared the fire that broke out on Monday afternoon in the foothills of the Montgó, at the height of Calle l’Ermita, was extinguished.

Recklessness is thought to be in the origin of the fire which was battled after the rapid mobilization of both professional and voluntary fire-fighting teams, the latter provided by members of the Protección Civil and the ISVH Voluntarios, as well as four air assets who battled with high winds and braved huge steep cliffs to tackle the blaze.

Extinguishing forces continued to cool the area throughout Tuesday to prevent the flames from reviving whilst investigating officers from the Policía Local and the Guardia Civil started looking into the origin of the blaze that affected some eight hectares.
