“WHAT HAVE THE ROMANS EVER DONE FOR US?”

If your reflex response was “Aqueducts” you’re probably a “Monty Pythonist”, but don’t worry, you’re one of millions throughout the world. Reportedly over 50% of all Brits love “Python” and that’s just one country. The list goes on to include sanitation, roads, medicine, irrigation, education, wine, public baths, safe streets, public order and health.

Not bad for a rule of 350 yea rs, and it seems they did much the same throughout their whole empire which stretched from the British Isles to the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and Caspian Sea.

In all the empire la sted for over 1,000 years, embraced over 50 countries and had an estimated population of between 45 and 120 million people.

How was it possibl e to govern such a huge area and such a diverse group of cultures and individuals for such a long period of time? Fear and oppression can only work for so long (Hitler managed just 12 years and Napoleon managed 15, even though they conquered much of Europe, and beyond).

So what did they do that was so different?

We know they had a rmies and won most of their battles and that punishment of offenders was often brutal. But when the fighting was done they brought public order and peace to warring factions.

In fact, their concept of government was that “social bonds, not command and control, were to be the primary

mechanisms of governance”. This meant that they were both democratic and collaborative, engaging in “value for value” trade and community activities. And by giving all citizens equal rights they avoided the need for an oppressive police state. The importance of equal rights for all citizens cannot be overstated.

A present day parall el is The Commonwealth, founded in 1949. Its first member was India, and it has since grown to 56 fully independent and equal countries (including Australia) all “working together for prosperity, democracy and peace”. It is home to a third of the world’s population. That’s 2.5 billion people working together of their own free will and more seeking to join. Clearly collaboration works.

If you take a look at a map of Sydney and you’ll see that Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs is virtually an island, with over 600,000 residents and more 130,000 businesses, charities and community bodies. Imagine the increase in productivity if there was an easy way for them to all collaborate.

Well now there is! it’s called Eastern Suburbs Collaborative.

WHALE SPOTTING WHILE YOU WALK

With World Ocean Day on soon –June 8 – it’s the perfect time to walk the South Head coastal path to see if you can see a migrating whale. Woollahra Council is running its popular Whale Watching Walks on June 4, July 2 and July 19 from 9am to 11am.

“These events are a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, connect with other people and hopefully spot some whales!” a Woollahra Council spokesperson told Eastern Suburbs Life. As tickets always sell out fast, it’s best to book a spot ASAP! And do bring binoculars if you can.

The whale watching walk and talk teaches attendees about the history of whaling in Australia as well as the natural and cultural heritage of the Vaucluse area.

Walks start at Macquarie Lighthouse –Australia’s first lighthouse, built in 1818 and designed by convict architect Francis Greenway for Lachlan Macquarie, then Governor of NSW.

The walks fi nis h at Gap Park, Watsons Bay which showcases panoramic views of Sydney Harbour and the ocean as well as colonial

history with early fortifications, shipwreck relics, and disused gun placements from past wars. While there, stroll the two-metre wide accessible pathway along the historic tramway route which takes visitors past bushland rock escarpment and through a lush rainforest gully – a very different experience to the exposed coastal walk hugging the cliff tops above.

WHALE OF A TIME

Entertaining for kids – and another fun way to learn about the east coast whale migration – is the immersive audio walking experience ‘South Head Whale Tale’ – which can be easily accessed online, anytime. Written by actor/writer Vashti Hughes, who is the voice of the lead female whale, she describes how whales feed in the bountiful Antarctic waters to enhance blubber reserves for the

long journey north towards the Great Barrier Reef. Abundant marine life plus whale rituals and habits are delightfully detailed as well as hazards they can encounter.

This story te lling project was inspired by Peter C. Stone’s award-winning illustrated book, Waltzes with Giants, with impressive creative contributions by the talented Friends of South Head collective – which includes actor Drew Fairley, comedian/journalist Wil Anderson and

FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC MAKING

Alison Tung is the current recipient of the St Mark’s Choir scholarship and loves being a chorister

“Making music with others is different from playing yourself, and I really enjoy creating different harmonies in choirs that you can’t create on your own. Singing with others also brings a lot of joy and connects you with people with different life experiences.”

She first sang with the St Mark’s Choir on Christmas Day 2021, before formally joining the Choir in March 2022. Alison explained: “I came to the Christmas Nine Lessons and Carols Service in 2021 through the invitation of David Drury (guest organist) and Stacey Yang (previous Organ Scholar). I met the Director of Music (Bill Clark) and the Choir and Bill invited me to join.”

Alison shared: “I really love making music, and I also play the piano and the violin. I have been part of choirs and orchestras during primary and high school. After graduating from high school, the opportunities for music are different, and I chose to sing in choirs because of how convenient it is (I’m partly joking but this is also true). Your body is your instrument and you don’t have to worry about carrying an instrument around!” Her passion is evident: “I hope to use music

to connect people with God, through the beautiful melodies and lyrics. Music is powerful and can spark emotions and reflections.”

Alison recom m ends joining the St Mark’s Choir. She reflected: “It builds up your music skills, especially on sight reading and collaborating with other choristers to create music together. Another benefit is that the time commitment is not onerous.” She counts singing descant lines during Advent and Christmas services with a majestic organ accompaniment as being amongst her most memorable St Mark’s Choir experiences. Is diabetes associated with poorer hearing?

Approximately 1.2 million Australian have diabetes, and over one million of these are adults with Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is more prevalent in ages 65 years and older (Source: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare).

Diabetes puts at risk m any parts of the body (e.g., eyes, kidneys) because of its role in causing dysfunction of small blood vessels and nerve dysfunction. The inner ear (cochlear) functioning can also be affected in this way, and therefore cause permanent sensorineural hearing loss. Researchers are currently examining thickening of the walls of the cochlear

blood vessels as a cause of hearing loss, as well as atrophy of structures that maintain the chemical balance within the cochlear. To maintain good i nner ear health for all (not just those with diabetes) it is advised to: avoid smoking, maintain good nutrition, and undertake regular exercise

Founders Sender and Chana Kavka started the bakery after recognising that young adults and school leavers with disabilities were missing transitional pathways upon graduating Year 12. For many families with a person who has a disability, exiting school and the transition to follow is a challenging moment. The demand for programs, training and access to information about pathway opportunities like the Friendship Bakery is crucial and often hard to come by.

Chana Kavka said “We have created a safe space where aspiring bakers and baristas can come and learn vocational and life skills. The program teaches everything from safe food preparation and storage to customer service skills and baking. The interaction between trainees and the community is a vital part of the success of this program and we welcome the public to come and discover this special neighbourhood bakery.”

Trainee Laura said “My favourite part of working at the Bakery is making coffees and serving customers, it’s a really fun place to work.”

The Friendship bakery is a bridge towards employment. Trainees have the support and environment to learn the skills and selfefficacy that makes moving beyond school and towards employment goals a piece of cake… or should I say Babke!

Walkabout with Ruth Darling Point (Part One)

In this Ed 54, my walk takes me around Darling Point (two part series).

I begin my walk in Darling Pt Rd at Ranelagh apartments built in 1967. In Dec 14, 1969 this was the tallest residential unit building in Australia with $2.5 million views, towering 122m above sea level and 85m above the road.

Heading down the road I turn right into Octagon Rd to the site of Ascham. The Ascham school property is based on a consolidation of two major nineteenth-century estates :

recently been occupied by the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney. In 1892, the estate was sold to grazier Michael Campbell Langtree. Langtree subdivided it and sold part of Greenoaks to the Church of England in 1910 for 6,750 pounds.

A plaque dedicated to Thomas Sutcliffe Mort (1816 – 1878) is situated here. Locally he is remembered as the generous benefactor of St Mark's Darling Point, and for his own landmark house Greenoaks. 5

Across the road in Greenoaks Ave is a plaque dedicated to Jessie Lady Street (1889-1970) who lived at 2 Greenoaks Ave, for over forty years, spent her life campaigning for equality and peace. Street travelled the globe advocating socialism, and lobbying for women’s and Aboriginal rights. At No. 3 Greenoaks Ave, there is plaque dedicated to Dr Max Herz (1876-1948) who was a German-born, Sydney-based medical specialist who introduced treatments new to Australia in his Sydney clinic, and has been recognised as the first fully-trained orthopaedic surgeon to have practiced in Australasia.

THE LOVERS is the Tarot Card.

The Lovers card features Adam and Eve with Angels pouring their heavenly influences and messages over them. Keeping in mind where the Lovers card falls within the Tarot layout and what cards lie around it.

It is also the card of Ying and Yang and urges you to make important decisions as you are always of two minds. You must let your heavenly influences help you and let decisions come naturally rather jumping ahead.

'Glenrock' and 'Fiona' (main house and dower house).'The Octagon', acknowledged as the oldest surviving building on Darling Pt, which is part of Ascham. The school was founded by Miss Marie Wallis in 1886, beginning elsewhere on Darling Pt in a terrace house in Marathon Ave. The school moved in 1895 to 'Delamere' in Goomera Cresc, and again in 1901 to Henry Mort's 'Mount Adelaide', before finally settling in 1909 at 'Glenrock'.

Further down the road is St Marks Church, made famous by hosting such famous weddings as Elton John's first marriage and the fictional wedding in the film 'Muriel's Wedding'. St Mark's church was built on land given by Thomas Sutcliffe Mort. After work was completed, St Mark's opened for divine service on Nov 7, 1852. Thomas Mort, Thomas Ware Smart and Thomas Whistler Smith were the first church wardens (known as the "Three Toms"). The bells, donated by Thomas Ware Smart in 1862, were first heard at the grand wedding of his step-daughter Mary Anne Lydia Oliver who, it was said, was attended by twenty bridesmaids. The tower and the steeple, completed in 1875, were a gift of William Bradley, whose Lindesay property was one of the earliest in Darling Pt.

The current rector, since 2013, is Rev. Dr Michael Jensen, a son of the former archbishop of Sydney, The Most Reverend Peter Jensen. I turn right into Greenoaks Ave. Next to St Marks is the gated house of Bishopscourt. Originally built by ironmonger Thomas Wooley in 1841.

In 1845, businessman Thomas Sutcliffe Mort leased the land, and purchased the cottage and the 2.8ha estate the following year for 2,500 pounds.

Mort transformed the cottage into a gentleman’s residence in 1846 and

named it Greenoaks. Edmund Blacket in 1859 and Professor Leslie Wilkinson in 1935 made later additions. Landscape designer Michael Guilfoyle, created one of the finest gardens in Sydney and the original plant still remains today. Since 1911, Bishopscourt has until

I then head back to Darling Pt Rd passing No. 32, Cloncorrick, built in 1884 for Sir George Bowen Simpson to a design by John Horbury Hunt in the Victorian Free Gothic style. Simpson named the house after Cloncorrick Castle in Ireland, where his grandfather once lived. The home was the residence of notable Australians and is considered to be a house of local historic significance.

The Chariot is drawn by two horses. It indicates that a time of struggling has been overcome and there are positive changes ahead. You need to continue to move forward. You must ride ahead with will power and determination.

The Chariot says you are moving away from disappointments and are heading into another realm. Again depending where this card lies within your Tarot layout and what cards are surrounding it. Through hard work and committment you will achieve your aim. This is a card of success.

Walking further down the road I turn right into Marathon Rd. No. 3-5 is a home called The Annery, which was built in 1884 for George Montague Merrivale and named after the ancestral home of the Merrivales in North Devon. A guard house was built, in the north corner of the garden alongside Marathon Rd steps which was on the line of the Maroo, the old walking track from the 'Lookout Post' to Sydney Town, to house soldiers guarding convicts working in area.

Across the road at No.1 Mount Adelaide St is Babworth House built for Sir Samuel Hordern II, in 1912 (Morrow & DE Peutron, architects) in a style combining elements of Federation Classical, Bungalow, a forerunner of Art Deco. In 1956 Sir Samuel Hordern died and the property was bought by Major Harold Rubin who presented it to St Vincent's Hospital.

The Chariot also suggests you must think with a clear mind particularly in emotional matters. Take time to let decisions come more naturally.

The 70th Sydney Film Festival will be held at cinemas across Sydney from June 7-18, 2023. THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE GUILTY

The world record for biggest Host A Murder – 300 people in one sitting – is held by Peter Eedy. Invited to NSW Parliament House to facilitate Host A Murder ‘Hi Teas’, Peter has also facilitated Host A Murder for Tony Robbin’s training team, the Reserve Bank of Australia and Rydges hotel chain owner Alan Rydge.

Unknowingly, Peter became the first person in the world to put on a murder mystery game in a restaurant.

It was in Spring, 1988 that Peter welcomed an old friend, Steve, to his restaurant in Surry Hills, who had one request: to play Host A Murder at his restaurant.

"What the hel l is that?" Peter asked. After Steve explained, Peter asked: "Didn’t you play that in your home a couple of weeks ago?" When Steve agreed, Peter enquired: "Well, why do you want to play it in my restaurant?"

His reply both surprised Peter and got him wondering. “Have you ever cooked a meal for eight people, served them, cleared the table and hosted a game, as well as trying to play it – all at the same time?!” Steve exclaimed. "Well, we did, and by the end of the night my wife and I were exhausted plus we missed out on half the game!"

After that, Peter realised why every second home in Sydney had an unplayed box of How To Host A Murder sitting on their shelves!

"So, what do you want? " Peter enquired. "I just want to sit down and enjoy the game,” Steve said. “I want your chef to cook the food, your waiters to wait on us, and I want you to host the game!” Intrigued by Steve’s suggestion, Peter responded with: "Bring it on!”

Steve inst ructed Peter on how to host the game and, in spite of making some

blunders in handing out the secret clues, the first Host A Murder went brilliantly! Guests enjoyed the experience immensely – Peter reporting that it was hilarious as well as enthralling.

A few weeks later, Peter invited Steve to host another game in the restaurant – the idea of putting on Host A Murder on a regular basis in his restaurant beginning to dawn on him.

A GAME HISTORY

Following Steve’s second game, Peter decided that he would first try one out with his friends, providing the food and drinks as well as hosting it himself – leading him to become the first person to put on a murder mystery game in a restaurant. The next is history!

Within a couple of years, Peter received so much publicity that the distributors gave him exclusive permission to use the game as well as use their logo in his promotions. Then Peter knew he had d iscovered a drawcard that was original, fun and entertaining as well as appealing to all ages – attracting many people to his restaurant.

Over the years, Peter expanded o uts ide his restaurant "Humble Beginnings" to other locations, near and far – as far afield as Fiji. After recovering from Covid-19 and having his entire business wiped out in 24 hours, he is now very much in demand, with companies wanting his services for team building.

Peter and his team are back a nd available for the game that will not die – for birthdays, hens’ nights, social clubs, graduations, farewell dinners, and reunions.

RETURN OF ICONIC BONDI FESTIVAL

Waverley Council is thrilled to announce the return of the much-loved Bondi Festival. Boasting an astonishing arts line-up that’s bolder and better than ever before, with world-class theatre, comedy, cabaret and interactive experiences, from Fri June 30 to Sun July 16, 2023.

Returning to its spiritual home at the newly refurbished Bondi Pavilion will open in a new (as well as various locations around Bondi), the 17-day, all-inclusive festival will have family-friendly shows and adults-only options. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said since its re-imagination in 2020, the Festival has become a hub for local artists, venues, and grass roots organisations within our creative and diverse neighbourhood.

"Bondi Festival is just one of the ways Waverley Council is helping support our local economy along with our local arts industry and provide a platform for artists to bring joy to audiences," Mayor Masselos said.

"For two week s over winter, it will transform our home by the sea into an eclectic, intimate and welcoming arts precinct for people of all ages to enjoy."

More than 30 different arts events and performances will run over the course of the 17-day festival.

Kicking off the opening weekend in Bondi Pavilion’s Garu (northern) courtyard will be a performance a from the renowned Jannawi Dance Clan, free shell-art and weaving workshops, bushtucker talks and food demonstrations, First Nations music, and First Nations food trucks to enjoy.

Visitors can also catch the award-winnin g new work from musical comedian Gillian Cosgriff, which recently won the highly coveted Most Outstanding Show Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2023, in her long-awaited return to comedy after three years starring in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

New Cutting-Edge Exhibition at Museum

Can you forgive? Do you want revenge? Was there justice?

Is it difficult to share your experiences with others?

These are just some of the questions posed to Holocaust survivors in the Sydney Jewish Museum’s major feature exhibition, Reverberations: A future for memory.

In a cutting-edge testimo ny gal lery, visitors have the opportunity to witness dozens of Sydney-based survivors answering major questions about their life experiences and hopes for the future. Each survivor appears life-sized on screen, and as they speak, images from their life stories pepper their words. There’s also a space to interact directly with the “digitised versions” of three survivors: Olga Horak OAM, Yvonne Engelman OAM, and the late Eddie Jaku OAM, who also appear on life-sized screens and use artificial intelligence (AI) to directly answer any questions you ask.

Watching the testimony and interacting with the AI technology, visitors are struck by the diversity of perspectives held by the Holocaust survivors. It’s clear that some survivors feel an imperative to forgive, while others feel it is important that perpetrators receive justice. For some, the stories just pour out, and for others, it can be a little more difficult to find the right words to say. While each survivor has a unique perspective, there is a shared sense among them that

the painful work they are doing – reliving their trauma – is helping to make the world a better place.

Holocaust survivor Jack M eister has been volunteering at the Museum for nearly 30 years. Jack admits that he has struggled for many of those years to talk about his experiences in Buchenwald, Buna and Auschwitz concentration camps. It was only recently that he began sharing his story with our visitors.

“I’ve been coming to the Museum for nearly 30 years, standing in the same place and spot. It’s my second home. Having the chance to tell people my story and what I went through all my life has helped me a lot. It feels incredible to have my story in this exhibition. I can't tell you how much it means to us survivors”.

Senior Curator, Shannon Biederman, points out that while Reverberations highlights the courage, endurance and resilience of Holocaust survivors, it also showcases the profound impact that this incredible group of people have made on the world, and on the study of history.

“Numbers, dates and facts provide important historical information, but they can’t express what it felt like for those who lived through it. Story by story and memory by memory, survivor testimony has helped to paint a fuller picture of how the events of the Holocaust have impacted survivors,

their families and wider society – and the force with which these impacts continue to reverberate to this day.”

Reverberations: A future for memory will be exhibited at the Sydney Jewish Museum until late Oct 2023.

NATALIJA'S PROJECT

There are not many times in my life when I can say I am really excited about an idea or a concept. Right now is one of those times.

I would like to introduce you to my concept. An idea that is inclusive, collaborative and highly suited to those that want to perhaps move outside their comfort zone and try something a little special.

I would like to invite you to "Natalija's Project." A social night out, where all are welcome and where I encourage those who have perhaps been feeling left out, isolated or just damn bored. You are welcome to come and enjoy dinner, drinks and a group of people that may feel akin to, and alive around. A fun experience.

I am a blind girl who is highly confident, lively and full of optimism and enthusiasm for life. It has occurred to me that there is not enough out there in the world for those with disabilities.

Further to this, there are no avenues or outlets for those who may not feel entirely comfortable with the mainstream and those that inhabit it.

My idea is not about heavy commitment and big deal sign ups, I just want to invite you to join me at a funky (central) restaurant for a meal. There's a small cost involved, the price of your meal, and there is so much to be gained.

Meeting and mixing with others. No judgement, no prejudice no awkward moments where people don't get you. I aim to make my socials as free flowing and happy occasions as possible.

The evenings are open to all, not just those with a neuro diversity or disability, but those just wanting to get out and mingle and mix and enjoy the differences of others.

Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize call for entries

Established by Woolla hra Council in 2001 as the first national prize for an original, freestanding sculpture of up to 80cm in any dimension, the Prize attracts some of the world’s most innovative professional and emerging sculptors. A prize pool of $29,000 is awarded to winning artists across four categories: the main acquisitive award of $25,000; a Special Commendation award of $2,000; the Mayor’s Award of $1,000 and Viewers’ Choice Award of $1,000.

We Bleed the Same: An Exhibition Exploring Racism and Diversity

This powerful photographic exhibition at Woollahra Library at Double Bay provides an account of racism in Australia, as experienced through the eyes of First Nations people, immigrants and refugees.

Presented in partnership with Freilich Project (ANU) and created by journalist and human rights activist Liz Deep-Jones, leading portrait photographer Tim Bauer and art director Brenda Dwyer, the exhibition includes a number of events and documentary screenings, including a yarning circle with James Michael “Widdy” Welsh.

Gilgandra Reserve and playground

We are inviting the community to provide feedback about our proposed upgrade of Gilgandra Reserve and Playground, North Bondi.

Concern over former Holden Suttons site redevelopment

Randwick Council will lodge a submission against a proposal to build more than 800 new homes including a childcare facility, general retail and supermarket on the former Holden Suttons site on Link Rd, Zetland. Councillors raised significant concern with the scale of the development and impact on nearby residents. Council’s submission requests a full assessment of traffic impacts be undertaken along with a heritage impact assessment. Council will now forward the submission to the City of Sydney for consideration.

Council partnership to deliver on affordable housing

Randwick Council will partner with neighbouring Waverley and Woollahra Councils to deliver more affordable housing for the eastern suburbs. The councils will work together to identify available grants and funding as well as to identity potential sites where more affordable housing could be built through a partnership approach.

Trial to light up park

Sports field lights at Nagle Park in Maroubra will be turned on five nights a week as part of a trial to support residents exercise and dog walking during the winter months. A recent Council community consultation found 93% support to proceed with the trial. The trial will now run until Sept 2023 and be evaluated afterwards.

Amenities building

Gilgandra Reserve is owned by Sydney Water with a lease agreement allowing the Council to use, manage and maintain the reserve for public use. Their consent is required for any upgrades on their land and Council Officers are actively working with Sydney Water on this project.

As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing our outdoor green space, Waverley Council has developed a concept design for the proposed playground upgrade which has been informed by Council’s Community Strategic Plan 2022-2032 and Play Space Strategy 2014-2029.

Council proposes to upgrade all play equipment to the latest Australian Standards for safety to provide a range of play experiences including active, imaginative, creative, social, quiet and free play.

A proposal to build an amenities building near the Malabar Ocean Pool will be put out for community consultation. The proposal follows community consultation in 2020 which found general support for an amenities building to meet the needs of pool users. Community feedback indicated the building should be compact, preserve nearby sensitive bushland and retain views from nearby properties. Randwick Junction Planning Proposal

A draft planning proposal to reinvigorate Randwick Town Centre will now be progressed to the Randwick Local Planning Panel for advice after Randwick Councillors considered the matter. A major review of the town centre has been conducted over the past few years to develop a 15-year vision and actions to guide the sustainable growth and physical development of the town centre.
