SSRI welcomes new assistant director
SSRI recently announced the appointment of Jennifer Sinibaldi as assistant director of the institute. Sinibaldi comes to Penn State from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation. Welcome to the team!
Abenaa Jones named Ann Atherton Hertzler Early Career Professor
SSRI cofund Abenaa Jones has been named the Ann Atherton Hertzler Early Career Professor in Health and Human Development at Penn State. Jones works to find solutions to complex, real-world problems, including substance use disorders, social and economic marginalization, and inequity in the criminal justice system.
The Russia-Ukraine war will hurt millions in Central Asia. Here's why.
In this opinion piece by SSRI cofund and CSA Director Guangqing Chi and Erin Hofmann for The Inquier, the authors say labor migrants who had been working in Russia and were forced to their home countries in Central Asia are now on the brink of a crisis and need humanitarian support.
Social Support Protected Mental Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic
In this new Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion, PRI Associate Danielle Rhubart and Jennifer Kowalkowski found that working-age adults who reported having more social support were less likely to report that their mental health was negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Read the data slice to learn more.
Insecure: New study links tap water avoidance and food insecurity
In research supported by PRI, a team of Penn State researchers examine whether those experiencing water insecurity — the lack of reliable access to a sufficient amount of safe water — were more likely to experience food insecurity.

Effects of an attachment-based intervention on autonomic regulation among opioid-exposed infants
Alexandra Tabachnick, Rina Eiden, Madelyn Labella, Mary Dozier
The present study evaluated the effects of modified Attachment Behavioral Catch-up (mABC) on autonomic regulation for opioid-exposed infants in a pilot randomized clinical trial. The team hypothesized that, compared to a control intervention called modified Developmental Education for Families (mDEF), mABC would be associated with higher resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and pre-ejection period (PEP) as well as greater reactivity to and recovery from a social stressor. Preliminary analyses showed that mABC was associated with healthier autonomic regulation during a social stressor than mDEF.

Sociodemographic Disparities in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Overdiagnosis and Overtreatment During Elementary School
Paul Morgan, Adrienne Woods, Yangyang Wang
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) overdiagnosis and overtreatment unnecessarily exposes children to potential harm and contributes to provider and community skepticism, resulting in less supportive care. The present study aimed to determine which sociodemographic groups of children are overdiagnosed and overtreated for ADHD. Analyses showed that White children are more likely to later be diagnosed and using medication among those whose prior behavioral, academic, and executive functioning suggested that they were unlikely to have ADHD.
