What is happening?

In 2017, The Metropolitan Police announced that Teddington Police Station was scheduled for closure. In August 2021, Sophie Linden, the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, confirmed that the site would be marketed for sale. The site is currently being advertised for sale on the open market.

Munira believes the building should be retained for community benefit, rather than sold off to luxury developers.

Specifically, Teddington’s Park Road Surgery urgently needs a new home, and there is a desperate need for more affordable housing for local key workers and young people who have been priced out of the housing market in our area.

The sale of this precious site provides a rare opportunity to transform a publicly owned building into a community asset with health services fit for the 21st century.

In February 2023, Munira secured a huge win when the Government officially backed her amendment to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill, which would allow the Mayor to sell disused police stations at a discount for community benefit. Ministers have tabled an amendment to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill that is going through the House of Lords. Read more in the Evening Standard here.

• 23 February2022: Munira secured confirmation from Minister Neil O’Brien that there is nothing in law or guidance that includes a specific requirement for MOPAC to dispose of land at market value.
• 3 March 2022: Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat London Assembly, handed our petition over to the Mayor of London.
• 7 March 2022: Called on Michael Gove to put pressure on the Mayor.
• 14 March 2022: Wrote to Mayor again requesting urgent meeting.
• 23 March 2022: Campaign receives a significant boost when MOPAC revealed it was seeking fresh legal advice on whether social value can be taken into consideration in the sale of the site.

• 3 May 2022: Munira and Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, wrote to Sophie Linden calling on MOPAC to publish the legal advice.
• 8 June 2022: Munira secured agreement from Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, that the LuRB Bill should include a provision that public sector owned assets can be sold below market value for social and community benefit.
• 6 September 2022: Munira wrote to the Mayor of London asking him to back the amendment and, on 20 October, MP Tim Farron presented the amendment (read more here).
• 13 December 2022: Munira secured a major breakthrough in her Teddington Police Station campaign when Ministers backed her amendment (read more here).
