It's getting to be that time...Harvest Time!  How did you do with your garden this year?  Are the vines dripping with tomatoes?  Are you overloaded with zucchini?  A great big bush of basil, ready for making pesto?!

What To Eat For Gout

Well that's what's going on at my house!

If you think about the history of what we call food these days, why there is such a gout epidemic becomes pretty easy to understand.  Food is better described as "food-like substances".  And here in the good old US of A, we spend FAR MORE on pharmaceutical drugs than any other country on the planet, and still have the sickest people.  Guess why?

That is why I rant and rave and say stuff like killing gout starts in the garden.  We are so disconnected from where our food comes from and how it is produced.  Having a garden - of any size or form - is critical to feeding yourself correctly and moving yourself away from gout.

This post is good for giving you some ideas.  It's about what was going on in our garden a few years ago - and yes, that is The Gout Wife in the picture!

Killing Gout Starts in the Garden...?

I know lots of people don't have the resources to grow their own food - that's no excuse.  As a human being, we need to have a direct connection with what our food is, where is comes from, and how our bodies process and use it.  Food is fundamental - we should be taught about nutrition and growing food in kindergarten...before we learn reading, writing, and arithmetic.

How's that for a rant?

Seriously, the only way to be sure about what you're eating - or as sure as you can be - is to grow your own food.

The next best thing you can do is support your local farmers, join a CSA (community supported agriculture), and frequent your local farmers market.  That is all a step in the right direction to clean up your food act and move yourself away from gout.

Take the time to read this post.  Once upon a time, food was food.  We can't say that as much today.  It is directly responsible for why gout has become a major health problem in the world today.

Thank you!

#72)  Banana Chicken Korma
Prep Time:  20 minutes
Cook Time:  20 minutes
Serves:  4

  • 1 large free range chicken breast
  • 1 large banana
  • ½ cup chopped organic broccoli
  • ½ cup chopped organic cauliflower
  • ½ cup chopped organic carrots
  • ½ tomato (diced fine)
  • ½ cup of organic peas
  • 1 medium-sized white onion (chopped)
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 13.5oz can coconut milk (BPA-free can)
  • ½ cup slivered almonds (toasted)
  • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger
  • 2 tbsp fresh mint (chopped course)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp red curry paste
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp chili flakes
  • ½ tsp fresh ground cardamom
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
In a dry pan, toast your almonds for about 2 or 3 minutes on medium heat, then set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the banana, coconut milk, half the almonds, tomato paste, and curry paste.  Mash and grind until fairly smooth, but still a little chunky.

In a large pot, melt the coconut oil on medium low heat, add the onions, garlic and ginger, and cook for about 5 minutes, until onions are translucent. Now add the chicken, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and tomato.  After 2 minutes, add all the additional spices (except the mint!) – cover and let cook slowly on medium heat for 5 minutes.

Now add the banana/coconut mixture, the peas, and the lime juice – stir frequently, and let cook for another 10 minutes till nice and hot.

Now it’s time to break out your finest bowls, dish out some generous portions, and top with the rest of the almonds and at pinch of the fresh mint.

“Wow”.  (I heard you say that after your first bite!)
