NEWS & UPDATES

Celebrating the Feast of St. Francis in Eastern and Western Michigan

Many congregations offering pet blessings throughout October

Several congregations across the two dioceses have offered (or will offer!) pet blessings this month in recognition of the Feast of Saint Francis, which falls each year on October 4th.

Pet blessings took on many forms this year as some chose to incorporate the prayers as part of Sunday services indoors and outdoors, some held special services outside of normal worship, and some blessings took place at animal shelters and other community locations.

Saint Francis of Assisi -- a twelfth century Catholic friar, mystic, philosopher, and mystic -- is known for his identification with the poverty and suffering of Christ and has become the patron saint of animals and creation. Click here to read more about St. Francis on the blog from the Episcopal Church Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music.

Photos, clockwise: the Rev. Jim Perra (Grace, Traverse City) blesses a horse; the children's choir at Grace, Port Huron was joined by a furry friend; dogs ready for the processional at St. Paul's, Flint; the Rev. Dr. Randall Warren (St. Luke's, Kalamazoo) offers a blessing; the Rev. Darlene Kuhn (Mediator, Harbert) offers a blessing; the Rev. Sue Rich (Trinity, Bay City) offers a blessing.
