A 19-year-old student has been found dead in his halls of residence in Manchester.

Police were called after concerns were raised about the man’s welfare. They discovered his body at the University of Manchester’s Fallowfield campus at around 5pm on Thursday.

The area has been in the headlines recently due to high numbers of coronavirus cases forcing many students to be locked down in their rooms.

But the university said in a statement the tragedy wasn’t related to Covid-19.

The student, who hasn’t been named, was pronounced dead at the scene. An inquest is expected to be opened shortly.

His friends and family are being given support, the university statement said.

Speaking on behalf of the man’s family, Dr Simon Merrywest, director for the student experience, said: ‘We can confirm that very sadly one of our students was found deceased in their hall of residence at around 5pm on Thursday, October 8.

‘We are providing all possible support to their family and friends and our utmost sympathies go out to them.

‘The family have asked us to make it clear that this incident is not Covid-19-related and that they would wish to see their privacy respected at this difficult time.

‘The university is working closely with the Manchester’s Coroners Office, so we will not be able to comment any further.’

The students’ union urged people to get support if they need it, in light of the incident.

A statement said: ‘The death of a University of Manchester student is something that deeply affects our community, and at this time, it is all the more important for us to look out for one another.

‘Our advisors are here to help you with anything personal that is going on for you. We’ll provide a confidential space where you can talk to us about anything that’s on your mind. We can help you to access additional support through the University and relevant external support organisations.’

Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers attended, alongside other members of the emergency services.

A statement said: ‘At around 5pm on Thursday, October 8, police received a report of concern for the welfare of a man at a property off Moseley Road, Manchester.

‘Emergency services attended and a 19-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

‘His next of kin has been informed. There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.’
