Using Prayer to Fight Spiritual Battles

Are you in a spiritual battle? I’ve been facing spiritual warfare the past few months. Though I knew it was coming, since all Christian authors face spiritual battles, it has still been difficult. I’ve learned that prayer is one of the most effective ways to fight back against Satan’s schemes, which I will explain.

Using Prayer to Fight Spiritual Battles

My battle is focused on my book launch, but I’m sure you have a fierce battle too. Perhaps your loved one is battling cancer. Maybe you have a prodigal son or daughter. Your marriage may be on the rocks, your job may be frustrating, or your child may be struggling. No matter what battle you are facing, it has a spiritual component.

Satan wants to gain the upper hand in the battles we face. None of us escape the hardships of living in this sinful world. Also, all of us will be tempted by Satan to become distracted, discouraged or defeated in our battles. As Christians we can find peace and strength by praying over every battle.

Praying about spiritual warfare before, during, and after battles increases your faith. By praying every day before a battle is fought, you stay close to God and learn to depend on him. Praying during the battle helps focus you on God instead of the problem. After the battle, prayer strengthens you and helps you heal, since you can draw comfort from God.

Bible Verses for Spiritual Battles

Ephesians 6:10-18 is a key Bible passage about fighting spiritual battles. Paul first explains what spiritual warfare is. Then he tells us to put on the full armor of God, describing each piece. Finally he concludes:

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”
Ephesians 6:18 NLT

Prayer should cover every part of our spiritual battles. Since prayer is essentially a conversation with God, it keeps our focus squarely on him even when life is hard. Prayer is our lifeline to the Lord of Heaven’s Armies when we need to stand strong.

While driving today, I was praying about upcoming battles. At the moment when I was thanking God in advance for victory, I saw a black snake trying to cross the road. The irony wasn’t lost on me. I recognized Satan’s clever tactic to cause fear and distraction through the form of a serpent. When I prayed that Satan will be defeated in my situation, the snake slithered back into the grass.

Satan will use whatever it takes to get you off track. Whether it’s a real snake, a mean comment, a social media post, or a phone call, he has the power to mess with you since he is the prince of this world. But you can fight back with the Holy Spirit’s power by going to God in prayer with persistence and fervor. Be alert and remember that Jesus has the final victory! In fact, by thanking God in advance for your victory, you will keep the enemy subdued.

Prayer for Spiritual Battles

Here’s a prayer to help you fight back:

Heavenly Father,
I praise you for conquering death and the devil.
Even though I face spiritual battles, you have already secured the victory.
Help me keep this in mind every time I feel weak or afraid.
I know Satan will tempt me toward discouragement, doubt and defeat.
Yet you have provided tools for me to fight back.
Equip me with your spiritual armor every day.
Teach me to pray consistently and passionately about my battles.
I know you will help me fight back with your mighty power and strength.
Thank you for protecting me on the spiritual battlefield!
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
