FIVE of Australia’s leading women in sport from the Tokyo Olympic & Paralympic Games will offer up their key learnings and advice to scores of NSW school children in the latest in a series of online events produced by the Minerva Network.

Three-time Olympic gold medallist swimmer Cate Campbell, UEFA Champions League Winner and PFA Women's Footballer of the Year Ellie Carpenter, two-time Paralympic gold medallist Madison de Rozario, two-time Olympic diving medallist Melissa Wu and two-time rowing world championship medallist Georgie Rowe will all speak at the webinar that is being offered first to Year 9-11 students who were impacted by lockdowns across Western Sydney and Western NSW.

Announcing the seminar, appropriately titled Shooting For The Stars, Minerva Network Chairman Christine McLoughlin said: “The past few months have been incredibly challenging, particularly for the students of NSW. Forced to learn from home and isolate from contact with their friends, it has been a true test of their strength, courage and resilience.

“The goal of this webinar is to give our school-aged children the chance to hear first-hand from Australia's leading women in sport who did us so proud in Tokyo. They all have their own stories of overcoming tough times and leveraging that experience to take them to the pinnacle of world sport.

“Our elite athletes not so long ago were kids with a dream and they are now outstanding leaders in our community who are wonderful role models for our next generation of young Australians.”

The interactive online event on Wednesday 20 October will be hosted by prominent sports presenter Stephanie Brantz. It is being presented by the Minerva Network in conjunction with Business Western Sydney and insurance company GIO, part of the Suncorp Group.

Mim Haysom, Executive General Manager, Brand & Marketing, Suncorp Group, said: “Our leading women in sport can inspire our young people who have been affected by the lockdowns by sharing their own stories of resilience and telling us how they overcame the challenges of a global pandemic to make it to the top.”

While the Shooting For The Stars online event is focused on helping and empowering those Year 9-11 students who were heavily impacted by the COVID lockdowns in NSW, other interested school-aged students, parents, teachers and advisors are welcome to tune in and become part of this inspiring event.

Experts agree that sport and physical activity generally helps children get fit, develop skills, make friends and learn to manage emotional highs and lows. Children learn to focus on effort, participation and fun . . . and they also learn to be resilient so they are better able to cope with the challenges of everyday life.

About Minerva Network

The Minerva Network (Minerva) is a highly professional not-for-profit enterprise which supports elite women athletes in NSW and across Australia  (www.minervanetwork.com.au).

The Minerva athletes have learned from some of Australia’s most inspiring women in business and are widely recognised as outstanding role models and leaders in our communities.

Supporting Role Models and leaders

With the rise in popularity of women’s sport, sportswomen are now being recognised as role models and leaders, and often are expected to step into these roles without guidance or the necessary support. Minerva Network provides that support.

As our communities look to role models to help them through the challenges of Covid-19, we can help to highlight the positive influence of these role models and amplify the impact they have on their community; in healthy lifestyle, leadership and equality.

Minerva is currently working with Business Western Sydney, the YMCA and GIO on an online event for Year 9-11 students in those NSW LGAs who have been most affected by lockdowns.
