The Maldives plans on launching a loyalty rewards program by December.

In a bid to attract more visitors to the Maldives, the Immigration and Ministry of Tourism have announced plans to launch a loyalty program for frequent holiday-goers to the country.

The new “Maldives Border Miles” program will have three-tiers: Aida (bronze), Antara (silver) and Abaarana (gold).

Although the press release states “each tier will be defined by a set variety of rewards, services or benefits, which increase in value as members progress,” there is no further information on what the rewards, services, and benefits entail.

The website simply says: “Once the tourist reaches a tally of a specific amount of points, privileges are rewarded with amazing benefits.

“As they move up the tiers, privileges are enhanced, and benefits are made exclusive.”

The small island nation reopened to all tourists on July 15, provided that visitors can present a negative Covid-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before their departure.

The country is desperate for tourist numbers to pick up again as the pandemic has gutted the industry.

Tourism accounts for more than two-thirds of the Maldives’ GDP and the World Bank estimates its economy could shrink by nearly 9 percent this year.

Experts have warned about food security in a nation that imports more than 90 percent of its food.
