Two Radiation Epidemiology Branch (REB) scientists and world experts in radiation dosimetry were recognized at the 2021 annual meeting of the Health Physics Society. Choonsik Lee, Ph.D., senior investigator, and head of the Dosimetry Group, delivered the prestigious Dade Moeller Lectureship; his lecture was entitled, “Computational Dosimetry Methods and Tools for Patients Undergoing Computed Tomography, Nuclear Medicine, and Fluoroscopy Procedures."

Dr. Lee develops methods and tools to estimate radiation dose from medical exposures, including treatment and diagnostic tests, in order to generate reliable data for use in epidemiological studies of ionizing radiation and cancer risk.

Matthew M. Mille, Ph.D., staff scientist, received the Elda Anderson Award which recognizes excellence in research/development, discovery/invention, devotion to health physics, and significant contributions to the profession of health physics for individuals under the age of 40.

Dr. Mille focuses his research on computer simulations and metrology related to the delivery, detection, and dosimetry of ionizing radiation in medical imaging, radiation therapy, radiation protection, and homeland security. His work has touched on the need to optimize the radiation dose received by patients undergoing medical imaging or treatment for cancer, as well as the need to detect and accurately quantify radioactivity inside the body resulting from nuclear medicine procedures or accidental contamination during a radiological emergency.

The Health Physics Society is “the home for radiation safety specialists and the trusted source of radiation safety information that enables the safe use of radiation to improve people's lives.”
