Barnes & Noble will replace two former Boston-area Amazon Books stores
Two Boston-area malls that were abandoned by Amazon earlier this year when the company decided to close all of its brick-and-mortar bookstores will soon become home to Barnes & Noble stores. It's a reversal from the status quo. Barnes & Noble's footprint has long been in retreat and the chain closed its location at the Prudential Center in June. Meanwhile, Amazon is often making headlines for its new distribution facilities, acquisitions, office buildings and upcoming grocery stores. However, Amazon's decision to close its Amazon Books stores in March was the end of the locations at Legacy Place in Dedham and MarketStreet in Lynnfield. Those are the malls where Barnes & Noble said it will soon be opening two new locations. The company said the MarketStreet and Legacy Place locations will be opening this fall, part of 16 new stores the company is planning to open nationwide this year.“A few years back it would have been unthinkable for Barnes & Noble to be opening so many new bookstores across the country. Moreover, to do so now stepping into the shoes of Amazon Books is an especially happy turn of events,” said James Daunt, CEO of Barnes & Noble. “Bookstores have never been busier, with our policy to empower our local bookselling teams proving especially successful. Our booksellers are creating inspiring bookstores and we very much look forward to doing this in Dedham and Lynnfield over the next few months.”
