Hulu has renewed Reservation Dogs ahead of its season 2 finale. One of the most well-reviewed series on television, Reservation Dogs premiered late last year. Created by Sterlin Harjo and filmmaker Taika Waititi, the half-hour comedy follows “Elora Danan” (Devery Jacobs), “Bear Smallhill” (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), “Willie Jack” (Paulina Alexis), and “Cheese” (Lane Factor), four Indigenous teens who live in rural Oklahoma. After the death of the fifth member of their crew, which somewhat pays homage to the 1990s Quentin Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs, the teens take to stealing and saving in order to achieve their dream of living in California.

Reservation Dogs is notable for having an almost entirely Indigenous North American cast and production team, in addition to several Indigenous writers and directors. The comedy has celebrated this fact both on-screen and off- since making its debut on August 9, which is celebrated as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. Since then, the streaming show has moved from strength to strength.

Hulu has now confirmed that Reservation Dogs will return for season 3, which is planned to premiere in 2023. The news comes ahead of the show's season 2 finale, which will arrive on September 28. In a statement, Harjo reflected on bringing the premise to life with Waititi. He also noted that the immense support the series received has been outstanding.

Reservation Dogs Is One Of TV's Most Acclaimed Shows

In addition to a bevy of nominations, including a Golden Globe for Best Comedy, Reservation Dogs has the distinction of more than 80 best-of lists. Critics have praised the cast for their performances, also detailing how the writers excel at mixing genres to tell a coming-of-age story that bursts with warmth. Other reviews have cited the rich visuals, elaborating on how the frames come alive with little details. More than anything, however, there's a widespread agreement that the Hulu title is uniquely funny in its ability to tug on heartstrings even as it's making you laugh out loud.

Still, in an arguably too-busy era of TV, when new and returning series are constantly popping up, there's certainly an argument to be made that Reservation Dogs hasn't gotten its due. But with a total of only 18 episodes, each usually clocking in at about thirty minutes, and at times much less, there will be plenty of time for fans to catch up with one of the most hilarious and heartbreaking comedies. It's one of the benefits of an early renewal announcement.
