Best Block Themes of 2022

Blue wordpress logoFull-Site Editing (FSE) was the most highly-anticipated aspect of WordPress 5.9. FSE harnesses the power of blocks, allowing users to customize every aspect of their sites from header to footer — all without dabbling in code or installing the Gutenberg plugin. At the time of 5.9’s release, there were only a small number of block-based themes to choose from, leaving very limited options for taking advantage of FSE.

Now, we’re months down the line. WordPress 6.0 is live, and the number of block-based themes has greatly multiplied. With plenty of opportunities to use FSE, it’s hard to narrow down your selection. With that in mind, here are the top five block-based themes available in WordPress in 2022.

Twenty Twenty-Two

It’s no surprise that this year’s default theme still ranks high on the list of popular block-based themes. Twenty Twenty-Two is one of the most versatile block themes out there, complete with a range of blocks, patterns, and templates plus several color schemes. Choose this theme if you’re following brand guidelines or if you’d like to change things up — without swapping your theme — in the future.

Hansen

This theme stands out from the crowd for its stylistic flair. Of course, all block-based themes are fully customizable, but Hansen packs plenty of personality by default. If you don’t have a design or style in mind, Hansen would suit your needs well. There are plenty of page templates and unique block patterns to choose from with Hansen.

Davis Blocks

Anders Norén, a well-known theme author, has recently redesigned his celebrated Davis theme into Davis Blocks. Crisp, clean, and professional, both versions of Davis are a minimalist’s dream. The lightweight design loads in a flash, and it’s perfectly suited for a simple blog or a site that emphasizes articles. Davis Blocks does not include any patterns, so it’s a great choice if lots of options make your head spin.

Ona

This theme is simple but stylish and user-friendly. It includes several block patterns and global style options, and the drag-and-drop functionality makes customization fast and fun. Out of the box, Ona looks like a lifestyle site. But it could be customized to meet any need. The default header is beautiful, too.

Tove

Tove is yet another fantastic them option by Norén. Unlike Davis Blocks, Tove is full of color and personality. It includes dozens of options, including over 40 block patterns plus various templates and global styles. Tove is geared toward restaurant sites, but like all block themes, it can be customized for any purpose. Tove wins bonus points for its large, eye-catching typography.

There are so many block-based themes to choose from, each with its own benefits and functionality. We’re spoiled for choice! It’s never been easier to dive into FSE.
