NEW YORK — The summer season is synonymous with vacation.
But in these unprecedented times, there are a lot of things to consider. With the COVID-19 crisis still a concern, some may choose to stay closer to home.
Robert Firpo-Cappiello, the editor-in-chief of Hospitality Technology, said before you hit the road, researching your destination is key.
Even though many states have opened up, some have implemented mandatory 14-day quarantine for out of state travelers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends you stay on top of COVID-19 spread where you are and you’re headed. Most importantly, find out measures taken to reduce spread at your destination.
The Trend for Summer Travel this Year
If you choose to fly, check TSA’s website to make sure that you’re on top of their new safety guidelines. For those who choose to stay grounded, roads are a growing trend during the COVID crisis. This option allow vacationers the ability to control their own space.
Firpo-Cappiello suggests visiting Minnewaska State park in New Paltz, New York. Also, Harriman State Park located on the border of New Jersey border and New York. Both are known for lakes, trails and breathtaking views.
Travelers may also consider taking a drive to the beach, where there’s plenty of space for social distancing. The only challenge would be leaving enough time for travel plans. So, start your trip early in order to get a prime spot.
Travel Stay Options
Airbnb remains a safe option. Firpo-Cappiello says that many owners are eager to welcome guests back as safely as possible. But the major hotel chains are all making an exceptional effort to invest in new technology and new procedures to guarantee cleanliness.
The new technology includes a touch-less guest experience where you can book online, and a virtual check-in. But, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, an RV may be more your style. The motorhomes are more popular than ever because some people see them as a solution.
However, he warns vacationers to be prepared in the event of maintenance issues and do your homework before putting your money and time into it.
Finally, when it comes to amusement parks, visitors can expect less crowding without physical contact. As for restaurants, expect more spacing and an outdoor dining experience.
