Legally Blonde 3's story will show Elle Woods as a parent. Released in 2001, Legally Blonde became a cult classic and helped to solidify Reese Witherspoon as a pop culture icon. Directed by Robert Luketic, Legally Blonde follows Elle Woods (Witherspoon), a perky sorority girl who enrolls in Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her boyfriend. Learning life lessons and overcoming stereotypes along the way, Elle makes unexpected friends with Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) and falls in love with Emmett Richmond (Luke Wilson).

Dominating the box office upon its initial release, Legally Blonde spawned a sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, & Blonde. Following Elle on her newfound career in Washington, the sequel appeared to be the final chapter of Elle’s journey. However, in 2018, Witherspoon announced she would don her character’s pink wardrobe again in Legally Blonde 3. Penned by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, Legally Blonde 3 has kept major plot details under wraps. Now, one of the creative forces behind Legally Blonde 3 unveils some developments.

Speaking with THR, MGM executive Pamela Abdy opened up about the plot of Legally Blonde 3 and revealed that the story will pick up with Elle Woods at 40 and as a mom with a successful career. Abdy also revealed the Legally Blonde 3 script from Kaling and Door is expected to be delivered soon. Read Abdy’s comments on Legally Blonde 3 below:

It’s really happening. Mindy Kaling and Dan [Goor] are writing it now for Reese [Witherspoon] to star. Reese and Lauren Neustadter are producing with Marc Platt. We’re all developing it together. What does Elle Woods look like at 40? Elle is a mom with a thriving career. We’re looking forward to seeing the script come in sometime in the first quarter.

As it stands, Legally Blonde 3 is still expected to release in May of 2022. It remains to be seen who will reprise their roles from the original film in Legally Blonde 3, such as Wilson, who has yet to confirm his return as Emmett. However, Abdy said the producers of the film are eager to attach him to the project. Witherspoon and Wilson as Elle and Emmett began a fan-favorite couple in the Legally Blonde saga, and it seems Kaling and Goor will opt to keep Elle and Emmett married in the next installment.

Indeed, the supporting cast of Legally Blonde, such as Coolidge as Paulette Bonafonte, helped to turn the film into a success and should be involved in the third film. Featuring Elle Woods as a mom with a thriving career will certainly leave the door open for the bubbly yet determined character to attempt to overcome any hurdles that may come her way in the next chapter. Legally Blonde 3 has a lot to cover in the life of Elle Woods two decades later.
