The Art of Mindfulness and Meditation

The Art of Mindfulness and Meditation

In honour of World Mental Health Day, I want to highlight the importance of taking care of the mind.

There are many ways but one that is gaining in popularity is the art of mindfulness and meditation.

I’ve always had a keen interest in all things wellness and have been investigating meditation and it’s reported benefits which seem to encompass everything from better sleep, reduced anxiety to weight loss and reducing age-related memory loss.

I don’t think any of us can ignore the negative effects that everyday stress and general day to day living can have on our mental wellbeing and I’m so pleased that practises to improve our mental health such as meditation and mindfulness are gaining momentum.

I have meditated on and off for the last 30 years but in my 20’s I didn’t really understand the impact it could have on my wellbeing as I do now that I have hit my 50s. I feel it is now time to commit myself more to the practise and try to incorporate it as a daily habit.

My first step is a meditation masterclass that I’m attending with the well-respected meditation and mindfulness expert Laura Coleman from Be Modern Meditation at a new retreat, The Rook Retreat, in the beautiful village of Amberley in West Sussex.

In preparation, Laura suggested I try one of her five minute meditation sessions via the Insight Timer app and despite a couple of brief interruptions when the dog sat on my lap and the freezer alarm going off, I really enjoyed it and felt remarkably fresh and relaxed even after such a short session.

I’ll be writing all about my experiences in the coming weeks and hope to share some useful insights, tips and resources with all of you.
