Former child actor Austin Majors, best known for his role as the son of Dennis Franz’s Detective Andy Sipowicz on NYPD Blue, died over the weekend. He was 27.
According to TMZ, which first broke the news, Majors — who was reportedly living in a homeless shelter — died after ingesting fentanyl.
In a statement to the site, Majors’ family — which includes former actress Kali Majors — called Majors a “loving, artistic, brilliant, and kind human being” who “took great joy and pride in his acting career,” adding, “He was an active Eagle Scout and graduated Salutatorian in High School. He went on to graduate from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts with a passion of directing and music producing.
“Austin’s younger sister, Kali, says her fondest memories with Austin were growing up on set with him, volunteering at events with Kids With a Cause, and backpacking together,” the statement continued. “Austin was the kind of son, brother, grandson, and nephew that made us proud and we will miss him deeply forever.”
In addition to playing Theo Sipowicz on NYPD Blue, Majors’ resume included guest stints on According to Jim, Desperate Housewives, NCIS and How I Met Your Mother.
Aw that’s awfully sad. I used to love watching his scenes with Andy. They humanized him so much and he was such a great little actor. What a shame. May he RIP
😭😭😭😭😭😭
Hearing how his family spoke of him and that he died in a homeless shelter is so so sad.
Exactly. WTF happened to this talented young actor? His last gig was in 2009, 14 years ago. That means he was done acting at age 13-14…???? Has he been an addict since then? What was done to try to help him? So senseless.
He has been working in the industry, doing audio and video work. He did graduate from college so it’s not like he has been on the street since he was 13, he wasn’t acting anymore and that happens to tons of child actors, but he was keeping his hands in the business.
Such a shame.
rest in peace to another young actor
His dying from Fentanyl makes me wonder if he had a drug problem the family just could no longer help him with. Many families are going through a lot. I hope everyone eventually finds peace. RIP to this young, troubled soul.
Another sad young loss due to fentanyl. My sympathies to his family, friends and fans. He was such a darling on NYPD Blue. Rest in peace.
Rest in peace.
Very sad. Fentanyl seems to be everywhere.
What a shame no one in family took him in. You are all guilty. I would never stand by if my relative is in homeless shelter. SHAME ON RELATIVE AND HIS SISTER. YOU ARE ALL SINNERS. GOING TO HELL.
And you know for sure that they just stood by and did nothing? The sad truth is that you can’t help someone who won’t help themselves.
And is judging not a sin? Who are you to condemn someone to hell? You should be ashamed of yourself, and your comment should be removed. You have no idea what his family did or didn’t do to help him. Having experienced this with a family member myself, we did EVERYTHING. Nothing worked, so he chose to live in a shelter because he couldn’t bear what he was putting his family through. You need to come down off of your high horse and pray you never have to go through anything like this.
God didnt send Jesus to condemn, I am pretty dang sure he didnt send you to do it either!
Shame on you for making assumptions about grieving relatives. There is a limit to what you can do to help someone who may not be ready to be helped.
Please stop. You have no right to judge anyone given you know NOTHING about him or his family. If he was drug addicted it is possible he didn’t want help or to seek treatment.
You don’t know whether it was them who wouldn’t take him in or he decided to distance himself from his family. They are a family who loved him and are suffering now, and to shame them and call them sinners is reprehensible. Speaking of sins, you’ve managed to cram a couple into your few sentences yourself – pride and judgment. You better hope your god is more compassionate and forgiving than you are
Have you ever dealt with someone that has a substance abuse problem or mental illnesses you have no idea what his family did or did not do we are all sinners you are a sinner I am a sinner we’re all sinners
Austin was one of the best child actors I had ever seen. If you watched or still watch NYPD Blue (as I do), you would notice that from the time he was three years old, the young man could really act- so much better than child actors who walk into a scene, say their one line and are shuffled out of the scene. Not Austin, his character “Theo” actually seemed like a kid talking to his dad and whomever else was in the scene. As he grew a bit, Austin was still a fine actor. This news is very sad for me, as I consider myself the biggest fan of NYPD Blue.
What a tragic loss for such a talented young man. My hear breaks for his family and friends. I hope he is at peace.
People saying that he didn’t have no one to help him and no family that they should be ashamed of theirselves have you ever dealt with anyone with substance abuse problems mental health issues you have no idea what his family did or didn’t do
Y’all please stop fighting,it’s a fallen world,it’s nobody’s fault, but Satan’s..
I’m so sad to learn this. My wife and I just completed ‘binge’ watching NYPD Blue—- and our favorite scenes were with Theo and Sipowicz. Our deepest sympathy to his family and fans
