As part of a grand experiment to encourage recycling of those oh-so-essential cardboard drink carriers from the Main Street Bakery on Main Street U.S.A., a few recycling cans have been blessed with what can only be described as a Drink Carrier Slot.

Picture this: a trapezoidal inlet, wider at the top, sloping inward, with a small rectangular notch at the bottom center. It looks like a smiling mouth with a single bottom tooth. Weird, right?

This unique shape is perfectly optimized to handle the dimensions of the cardboard drink carriers that hold your beloved Starbucks beverages. These odd cans first graced Main Street in September 2024 and, as of now, are the only spots flaunting the Drink Carrier Slot Cans.

The rest of the receptacle? Oh, it’s your standard, uninspired “Walt Disney World doesn’t bother anymore” brown can with no theme, except for some darker brown trim. At least the unique slot shape adds a smidgen of interest.

This test might actually succeed if the slot was labeled for its intended use. Without the contextual clues of its location in front of the Bakery, one might wonder what the odd shape is all about. It will be interesting to see if this specialized recycling can makes its way to other parts of WDW.
