Dwarf Fortress, a game in which you will run a functional fortress, complete with the ability to trade goods and other fun features, is finally nearing its release date after years of development and coding. Trading goods is an extremely important function in Dwarf Fortress, and it’s crucial for you to understand how the whole process works. As with any game where you build a settlement from scratch, you’ll soon find that you won’t be able to produce all of the resources you need by yourself and will need the assistance of a trader. Keep reading along to learn how to trade goods in Dwarf Fortress.
Dwarf Fortress: How to Trade Goods
You’ll soon find as you make your way through Dwarf Fortress that every couple of months in-game, a Trader and caravan will visit your fortress with the intention of trading with you. They will be able to offer you goods that you can’t create or grow for yourself, which can be very helpful later on. However, in return, you will very likely be trading different crafts that you’ve created in your craftdwarf’s workshop. That being said, it’s a great idea to stock up on some tradable items. Be sure to craft many items that are created with rock, as they trade the best.
You will need to have a Trade Depot before you can have any traders visit and trade goods in Dwarf Fortress. This can easily be done from your Build Menu. This is where the Trade Caravan will set up shop and allow trading goods. Once you’ve got your Trade Depot in place, it’s time to get trading.
When a Trade Caravan arrives, you will be able to assign a dwarf to the Trade Depot. Ideally, you would assign a specialized broker to the Depot, but any dwarf will do. Next, you’ll have to bring in the items you wish to trade for other items. And now, it’s finally time to do some bartering to trade goods in Dwarf Fortress. The process of bartering is quite simple. Take the value of the items you’d like to trade for and compare it to the price of the items you’d like to give the merchant in return. Bartering is a great idea, as you can lower the price of the items you’re trying to get by a considerable amount.
