Description
These two openbill storks in Botswana Africa were having an intense ‘discussion’ over some bits of food. Openbill storks get their name from the slight gap that exists between the upper and lower mandible so that the bill touches only at the tip. The opening becomes more pronounced as the bird matures. The overall plumage is black with some iridescent green in places. The legs and feet are black. The shape of the bill is an adaptation to the birds’s specialized diet of snails and other mollusks, allowing them to grasp and carry the shells in the opening while being able to extract the animal from its shell with the tip. African Openbills thrive in sub-Saharan African wetland areas wherever mollucskan prey is available.
