Climb high above the town of Taormina Sicily to the small village of Castelmola for spectacular views of Mt Etna. Mt Etna it the highest and most active volcano in Europe and has documented records of eruptions dating back to 1500 BCE. It has been placed on the United Nations list of “Decade Volcanoes”, a list of the sixteen volcanoes that can have the most destructive eruptions due to their proximity to populated areas. Mount Etna is less than twenty miles from Sicily’s second largest city, Catania, with a population of about 300,000 residents, and the seaside community of Taormina. Etna is in an almost constant state of activity but it was only puffing out steam the day we were in the area. The thrill seeker in me wanted to see an eruption but the more practical me was happy to see the little puffs! In June 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
