On May 20, the Valley Symphony Orchestra held their annual fundraising gala, Bravo! VSO. The event raised funds for the Symphony’s upcoming concert season and education programs. Bert Ogden BMW of McAllen was the title sponsor of the event, which was supported by more than 40 local businesses and Symphony supporters. Following a gourmet dinner in the McAllen Performing Arts Center lobby, the orchestra performed with UTRGV’s award-winning Mariachi Aztlán.

On May 2, the RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held their monthly Manic Monday Mixer at Reyna’s BBQ, located at 812 W. Expressway 83 in Weslaco. Members enjoyed delicious BBQ brisket, fried pickles & their famous Texas iced tea! Catch the next Manic Monday on July 11th at North Park Lexus Rio Grande Valley in San Juan. STANDS WITH UVALDE
A week after the tragedy unfolded in the City of Uvalde, Mission city leaders hosted a candlelight vigil to honor the 19 children and two teachers killed senselessly in the Robb Elementary School shooting. The ceremony was held outside Mission City Hall, allowing the public an opportunity to grieve together and honor the community of Uvalde.

HURRICANE SEASON STARTS NOW The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and extends through November 30. Hurricane activity is typically more intense during August and September. Significant hurricanes of Categories 4 or 5 may require the evacuation of residents, but even a Category 1 storm can produce devastating damage. Hurricanes can bring high winds and flooding, so you need to protect yourself from both the wind and the water.

A second option is to board up windows with 5/8’ marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. * Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more wind resistant. * Clear loose and clogged rain gutters.
* Food in your refrigerator may be unsafe to eat if the power is off for 4 hours or more. * Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed to help keep food safe longer. * A freezer full of frozen food will be safe for no more than 48 hours (24 hours if half-full).
AFTER A POWER OUTAGE: * Clean out your refrigerator and freezer BEFORE you put new food in it: * Wash the inside of the refrigerator and freezer first with soap and warm water, then with a mild bleach solution or disinfectant wipes. * Let the freezer and refrigerator get cold before you fill it with food.

* Position portable generators outside at least 20 feet away from your home. Keep your generator away from doors, windows, or air intake vents.

On May 7, 2022, Make-A-Wish Rio Grande Valley held its 22nd Annual Evening of Wishes Gala. The annual gala is the Rio Grande Valley Chapter’s largest event and helps fund wishes for local children with critical illnesses. This record-breaking event hosted over 400 individuals and raised over $350,000, which is enough to help the chapter fund wishes for all the children who are currently on their waiting list. Wish Hero Sponsors included Vantage Bank, Burns Motors, Corporate Solutions, Charlie Clark Nissan, and Ron Hoover RV, Marine, and Equipment.

THE CITY OF PHARR Earns Governor’s Texas Award for Performance Excellence by the Quality Texas Foundation The City of Pharr is proud to announce that it has earned the Governor’s Texas Award for Performance Excellence (TAPE) from the Quality Texas Foundation (QTF). The City of Pharr is being recognized as a role model organization demonstrating exceptional performance in all areas of organizational management - leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, workforce focus, operations focus, and results. “This is incredible news for the City of Pharr, our community, our region, and our state,” said Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. “We have been strategically working towards this goal over the last few years with the ultimate goal of earning the highlycoveted Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest presidential honor for performance excellence, and one to which Pharr strives to achieve,” continued Hernandez. “This means we are one step closer,” he added. Since 1993, the Quality Texas Foundation has administered the Governor’s Texas Award for Performance Excellence (TAPE) as an independent non-profit corporation. Winning the Governor’s TAPE symbolizes that the organization is one of the best in the state of Texas, and it is based upon a very rigorous and robust process that has resulted in 21 National Recipients and 59 State Recipients, according to the QTF website.
“The City of Pharr has accomplished what many cities are afraid to look into,” said Dr. Mac McGuire, Chief Executive Officer of the Quality Texas Foundation. “The Malcolm Baldrige Quality Framework includes a robust review of Leadership, Strategic Planning, Customer (resident) Service, Utilization of the appropriate defensible measures, the Workforce Environment and Engagement, Operations both tactical (daily) and strategic (long term), along with the verifiable results for each area mentioned above,” he continued. “The City of Pharr excels at each one,” added Dr. McGuire.
Pharr is now only the third city in the entire state of Texas that’s obtained the Governor’s Award — the ultimate recognition from the Quality Texas Foundation. Last April (2021), Pharr was awarded the “Progress Level Recognition” from the Quality Texas Foundation, which put the City of Pharr only two steps away from reaching its goal of national recognition. “This is a long, arduous journey that many organizations attempt and very few achieve,” stated Hernandez. “However, we continue to strive to be a city that provides service excellence and a culture of continuous improvement and I am so proud that our hard work, persistence, and www.socialifeRGV.com

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team hosted the University of Texas on April 26 at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg. The visiting Longhorns marked their first trip to Edinburg in 51 years, and there were 6,418 fans in attendance to see the instate matchup. The 6,418 in attendance also marked a single-game program record for the Vaqueros. The Longhorns picked up the win 7-2.

I love to attend social events in the summer! I think it is so much fun because events tend to be more casual and often held outside. What is your advice when it comes to dress attire for outside summer events? Since I am a June baby, I am also a fan of summer events. They are just so much fun! When it comes to dress attire, you should take the same approach as you do during other times of the year. Pay attention to the invitation. Is the event a Pool Party? A Golf Event? A Backyard BBQ? Depending on the event, you can decide on the most appropriate thing to wear. Think about the fabric you will be wearing because most outdoor events in the summer are hot. Linen and cotton are great fabrics for summer events. Also, think about layers so that as the evening sets in, you may appreciate a scarf or summer wrap. However, no matter what event or what fabric, always dress tastefully by making sure your clothes fit properly and not too much skin is showing. Have fun!
I love to dine family-style! I think it is so much fun when restaurants place large portions of all kinds of food on the table for my family and me to try. However, it gets a little crazy with my family reaching over each other to get to the food they want. What should I do to teach them the right way to eat family style? Family Style dining is so much fun! One thing you want to keep in mind is that when we reach over plates of food to get what we want, we risk getting our shirt sleeve or arm covered in food. It is also much harder to pick up a heavy plate of food from far away. The best thing to do is to ask the person next to the plate to pass it to you, and then you can ask the person sitting next to you if they would like some of the food before you pass it around the table.
My husband and I were recently enjoying an amazing dinner at The Patio in McAllen. I noticed that when we were leaving, my husband just got up and pushed his chair way back. He didn’t even place his chair back under the table! Is there a rule about this? Help!! First of all, The Patio is certainly one of this author’s favorite places to dine. Secondly, yes, there are some things to consider regarding your chair at the dining table. It is always a good idea to push your chair under the table when you leave. This clears the way for people to walk around, but it also signals to the wait staff that you are not returning. I hope this helps! On May 15, the best of the valley’s high school theatre was on display at the McAllen Performing Arts Center, celebrating the Palm Awards. The Palm Awards is an annual, non-profit high school theatre award show with over 1,500 participating students from the Rio Grande Valley. With support from over 30 local sponsors, $25,000 was awarded in scholarship money to its winners. This year’s red-carpet event included celebrity appearances from HBO Max’s cast of Father of the Bride and NBC’s New Amsterdam. The star-studded event was hosted by actors David Barrera, Maria Canals-Barrera, and Raul Castillo.

This year’s theme was “You Can Do It.” The scholarship was founded in 2013 by the Salinas-Bustos families and Cindy’s high school teammates Angeline Gutierrez & Deanna Sanchez, and has awarded a total of $36,000 to female athletes from Edinburg high schools. The awards are given to deserving female student-athletes that were just like Cindy—top honor students in varsity athletics with a strong history of community service.

OF THE USS KITTY HAWK By Dr. Kimberly Selber

Like waiting on an old friend not seen in decades, hundreds of veterans and spectators lined the shores of Isla Blanca Park to pay tribute to the USS Kitty Hawk one last time. On May 31st, the US Navy’s last commissioned conventionally powered aircraft carrier finished her final voyage. Traveling from the Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington, the “Battle Cat” traveled 16,000 miles to Brownsville, Texas. The massive aircraft carrier was too large to go through the Panama Canal and had to be towed around South America and through the Strait of Magellan, a journey that took several months. The majestic lady was commissioned into service in 1961, and by 1962 she was practicing launching and recovering the U-2 Dragon Lady— high-altitude reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft. Seven years later, Kitty Hawk and her air wing

were awarded a presidential unit citation for contributions during the Vietnam War’s Tet Offensive. In 1998 Kitty Hawk moved to Yokosuka Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan. For the next ten years, she was positioned in the Pacific, only leaving to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and later, Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2009, USS Kitty Hawk was officially retired and was the last ship in its class to be decommissioned. As their final salute, many former Navy Veterans who served on the Kitty Hawk attended a tribute ceremony at the Cameron County Amphitheater to share stories and see old friends. It was the end of an era.

The manmade RGV Reef, about 13 miles off the coast of the South Padre Island jetties, is bringing back red snapper, turtles, and all sorts of marine life. This rejuvenation is thanks to the efforts of the non-profit group Friends of RGV Reef. The reef is about 75% complete, but now it’s embarked on another exciting venture – working with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to see if the reef could also help in the battle against climate change. It is believed reefs, both natural and manmade, capture and store carbon – an act of carbon sequestration – and can assist in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2). Now thanks to a $250,000 Fueling Futures grant from Enbridge Inc. to Friends of RGV Reef, samples from the reef and marine life can be collected to advance research to answer these questions.

Preserving Fragile Objects By Melissa Peña, Collections & Exhibits Coordinator at the Museum of South Texas History
The Museum of South Texas History is home to a vast collection of artifacts such as porcelain, china, glass, silver, and other fragile dishware that require careful storage for long-term preservation.
We begin the process of preserving these items by assigning each piece an identification number. We then analyze each item for details to list on the condition report, such as chips, stains, abrasions, and accretions, to name a few. After the description is complete with all the necessary information, we create a file for each number and update it in our database, CatalogIt. Next, we photograph each fragile

object to have a clear visual of the condition of the artifacts at the time of acquisition. Storing fragile objects can also be done at home. Archival quality storage supplies can be found at art & craft supply stores and online. Look for products labeled acid-free, archival, and specific to storing dishware, such as narrow and compact boxes. Something to consider when storing fragile

items is damage from breakage. With that said, make sure to fill all empty spaces and in between items with acid-free tissue paper to ensure there is no space for items to move around in the box. Do not use materials like bubble wrap or other plastics that can stain and imprint onto fragile objects over time. Keep dishware together by set and label boxes to minimize searching and unwrapping your entire collection. Do not stack boxes as over time the weight of each box can warp other boxes, which can lead to breakage.

Also, be sure to store boxes in low areas on a shelf and not on the ground to avoid any accidental damage. Is it ok for me to take my pet on summer vacation with me? I just can’t seem to leave her behind! Of course, it is ok to take your pet on vacation with you. However, make sure that your vacation destination is pet friendly. You do not want to arrive at your destination to find out that pets are not allowed. Do a little research prior and make sure your pet is welcome.
As soon as anyone walks into my home, my dog jumps all over them. What is the best way to handle guests and pets in my home? Many people have this same issue! First, it is always best to inform your guests that you have pets in your home. This is very important because some people have allergies that you may not be aware of. Secondly, consider putting your pet in another room until your guests get settled. This will avoid the immediate and maybe unwelcome chaos that often happens when our pets welcome our guests.
We spent some time on South Padre Island last weekend, and we took our pets with us. We had a blast, but everyone kept coming up to my dog and petting him. What is the best way to handle this since we really don’t like strangers touching our do? This is such a good question because I think it happens a lot. We should all remember that, as much as we may love pets, not all pets love people touching them. As a pet owner, I think it is ok to inform strangers who approach that your pet does not like to be touched. Ask them politely not to pet your dog. Thank them for their attention, but explain that your dog is not fond of strangers.
