Two months ago, gang leader Gerard ‘The Monk’ Hutch was acquitted of murder over the Regency Hotel attack. It was a shock verdict — but it was the Special Criminal Court’s finest hour.

The current Special Criminal Court was set up in 1972 to try terrorist suspects under new rules, adjusted for the IRA threat. More recently, its remit was extended to include the godfathers of organised crime.
