Jonathan Oldfield on his show One Way Mirror

Our guest this week is Jonathan Oldfield. Jonathan is bringing his new show, One Way Mirror to The Pleasance from 24 April. The show is about his experiences of watching people through the one way mirror that is the frontage of the solicitors office he has been living in as a guardian since 2019. This means people outside see their own reflection in the office windows, completely unaware that on the other side is actually someone’s front room. It sounds far fetched, but it is completely true, as you will hear.

We chat about why he found himself living in such an unusual place, how the show devleoped from this, and we of course have to touch upon whether he feels a voyeur as he watches people outside, and whether he feels like the wildlife cameramen who film but never interfere with what is happening.

(One-Way Mirror has announced new dates for Camden People’s Theatre on 29/ 30 September 2023, tickets here.)

One Way Mirror

The Pleasance

24 – 29 April

“Tonight you will make a choice. Am I watching you? Or are you watching me?”

One Way Mirror is the true story of a man living with a large one way mirror in his front room. As people walk past on the busy high street, he sees them, and they see themselves. He sees everything: people pouting, people picking noses and people phoning their mum. He’s seen 3 physical fights, 4 messy snogs and 1 genuine divorce. Or has he?

One Way Mirror is a new interactive story about the art of people watching, where the audience decides the outcome of the show itself.

Made with support from Elevate East/Rich Mix, Camden’s People Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East and Interactive Soup.

Jonathan Oldfield is a theatre maker based in East London. He trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and with John Yorke Storytelling. Winner of the John Thaw Initiative, his show I Just Want Someone To Know I Was Here had a sold out run as part of A Play, A Pie and A Pint at Edinburgh Fringe. He’s one half of PillowTalk Theatre with Lorna Rose Treen.
