These conditions can include pelvic pain (abdominal, vulvar, penile, vaginal, anal, or scrotal), urinary urgency and frequency, hesitation with urination, sexual dysfunction, bowel issues, urinary or fecal incontinence, and more. The muscles of the pelvic floor help regulate and support our organs of elimination and sex. When the pelvic floor muscles become dysfunctional, they can create pain and barriers for normal urinary and bowel elimination as well as optimal sexual health. A pelvic floor therapist which is also a licensed PT will evaluate your pelvic floor and find a treatment that best suits your needs. A common misconception is that kegels and pelvic floor strengthening is part of all pelvic floor treatments, this is not true and can exacerbate some individuals with pelvic pain. Every individual needs a personalized physical therapy treatment which includes internal and external pelvic assessment, manual therapy, stretches and exercises to achieve your goals. At times, recommendations to providers such as gynecologists, urologists, GIs and pain management specialists will be discussed if appropriate.
