Social Credit Leader Passes Away
The leader of the Social Credit party, Chris Leitch, passed away this morning after a long battle with neck cancer.
He is survived by his wife Anne, son Andrew, two stepdaughters Tracey and Darian, and brother Tim.
Mr Leitch was a long time activist for Social Credit having held just about every position in the party since he first became involved in 1972, a feat he was awarded life membership for in 2012.
His father was candidate in the 1960s and his brother has also been a candidate several times.
The Social Credit Political League came into existence 70 years ago in 1953 and has stood candidates in every election and most by-elections since that date.
It has been successful in getting six MP’s into parliament in that time.
This is very sad news. Sincere condolences to Chris’ family.
It is vital that Soc Cred remain on the political stage.
They were the only political voice that put it’s head above the parapet and suggested direct Reserve Bank financing during Covid. From Stuff 20th June, 2020……..
“One of Leitch’s concerns with QE is that banks might cream a huge profit through the “merry-go-round” of selling Government bonds to the Reserve Bank and then buying bonds from Treasury when it issues them to pay for the Government’s $50b Covid-19 fiscal programme.
Why not fund the spending direct, with a giant zero-interest loan from the Crown’s balance sheet to itself, it asks?”
Why not indeed? Instead, Grant R. did what a NAct Finance Minister would do and facilitate massive bank profits to be harvested for the benefit of the few.
RIP Chris Leitch, and may the Soc Credit philosophy continue to challenge failed monetarist ideology.
He was also the only NZ politician who stood up for Assange
Every other polly was too gutless to go against the grain
A bloody good guy
Almost forgot about those guys and girls…thanks Martyn for bringing this up….There meetings were magnets for mad bastards…entertaining
So you didn’t go for anything but a laugh nathan?

All truth passes through three stages.
First, it is ridiculed.
Second, it is violently opposed.
Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
Greywarbler! Your back, welcome to 2023…all best!
Condolences. I always read Chris’s articles when they appeared.
Thankyou Chris Leitch for your long service to Socred and contributing with very good ideas and analysis of the workings and failures of this draconian economy and those who hold us hostage to monetarism.
I hope that in the near future a new movement can begin to represent the many who are disadvantaged and maligned as slaves in this neo liberal paradise and that many of Social Credit ideas could be included in a powerful real alternative to the destruction being meted out to so many good people all in the name of financial greed and slavery.
Go well Chris Leitch.
He was a rather queer fish Mr Leitch by some left standards, but he always maintained and practiced his freedom of speech, assembly and association as engaged citizens do. Social Credit seem to have minimal idea that we live in a class society really, they think a different Excel spreadsheet can fix things. But hey, good on them in a certain way. TOP has probably picked up their legacy.
Chris was too honest to be a politician in this country. Social Credit bowled over the labour Party in many seats in the nth IS.
It was SC who brought the Anti-nuclear movement into the political discussion. (Check out Hansard for gary Knapps bill). Lange was dragged kicking and screaming into joining the movement and of course had to take it over as if it was his idea.
Sc with Chris was the original environment party without the extremists.
Chris came within 1500 votes of taking Muldoons old seat. National and Labour never worked so closely on any matter than keeping SC out of “their” Parliament. I hope someone publishes his achievements, they were many and entirely honourable.
Someone passes away, and that’s the sort of churlish comment you choose to make??
@Nathan
Jase – wow…such Fake Moral Authority!
You must do such respectful heartfelt eulogies at funerals. And what’s this “fake moral authority “ attempted barb? Just being aware of where and when it’s appropriate to label a recently deceased leader of a group as “mad bastards” is simple common decency.
