Moving Target : A Porter Novel (The Porter Series Book 2) Kindle Edition
A clan of drug pushers. A high-profile hostage. To track down his target, he’ll cover the mountains in blood...
As a former federal agent, Porter does his best work outside the law. So when his friend from the FBI calls in a favor with a hefty reward, Porter heads straight for the heart of the Appalachians. Since by-the-books tactics failed to bring home an agent’s abducted daughter, Porter gets free reign to crack skulls and take names while the agency looks the other way.
Deep in the heart of the mountains, Porter matches wits and muscle with rowdy bikers, money-hungry dealers, and a vicious Mexican cartel. As the chase for the kidnappers kicks into high gear, he’ll need to strike fast to secure his payday… and save the hostage’s life.
Moving Target is the second novel in an exhilarating series of crime thrillers. If you like unflinching action, gritty heroes, and white-knuckle suspense, then you’ll love RA McGee’s vicious rescue mission.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2023Want to read a book without having to mentally edit it as you go? This one’s for you.
It’s been edited and proofread just like all the good books used to be. As a bonus, you get a great protagonist with an excellent and fast-paced storyline.
Well done, R.A. McGee. Well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020Okay, bottom line first, I liked it and I'd recommend it. Liked the protagonist's confidence and ability to back it up, his somewhat mischievous take on situations and their solutions. Doesn't take himself too seriously, a loyal friend when it counts and ready to step up and make things right. Short-lived romantic connection was brief and basic but solid and not based solely on sex. I got no message that Porter had any problems with the whites he encountered, country dwellers or otherwise. Liked him a lot and will read more of this series. Some may have thought it formulaic, but basically what isn't? I saw no problems with the dialogue (the characters aren't rocket scientists, after all) or with some of the beginning being written from the POV of a 13-year-old girl. I didn't find her thinking to be younger and don't know what that other reviewer could have expected from a 13-year-old: Shakespeare? Head crook on the wrong side of the law was predictable but not disappointing.
For those who are keeping score, here are the standings:
(1) Zero paranormal/supernatural/magic components;
(2) Occasional profanity but not excessive and scene/character appropriate;
(3) No gooey romance;
(4) No explicit sex;
(5) Violence but not graphic;
(6) No child abuse;
(8) No animal abuse;
(9) No alternative lifestyle agenda or promotion;
(10) Not a cliffhanger ending;
(11) Grammar and punctuation police, come ahead on: I know you'll find something.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2023'Moving Target' was phenomenal. I loved the ironic tone the author created with the vivid details and the humorous way Porter, the protagonist and the man who got the job done, presented his POV throughout the tale. At most junctures, I liked the way dramatic irony was used which kept the reader somewhat ahead of the action until the twist towards the end. I saw something coming but not from the direction it came. The author gave the reader a thrilling ride. Although it was a mystery, it was a very entertaining and levity-filled narrative, and I liked it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2025Porter is an awesome character and I love the action.
I am definitely hooked and cannot wait to read the next Porter book!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2023This book didn’t disappoint. The story was awesome and the characters were equally terrific. I already downloaded number three in this series. I can’t wait to begin reading it. I love Porter’s character. Keep this series going. I love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2023But not much more. I wavered between three and four stars for this book. I thought the plot deserved a four. The pacing is good, the action is dramatic but not too over the top, and the story kept me reading. I finally decided on the three because the rest of the book didn't live up to its potential. Porter put me off so much at the beginning that I almost didn't get past the first few pages. He seemed obnoxious and arrogant for no particular reason. Eventually I mellowed toward him, but never really cared about what happened to him. He seems to me to be the stereotypical strong, silent, invincible comic book hero. The rest of the characters also could have stepped out of the same comic book. Would I read another in the series? I don't know, but I doubt it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2020I recently picked up this book and am really glad I did. It's fast-paced and gritty, with a plot that moves along, and characters that are well-built and three-dimensional. This book is not for the faint of heart and contains a far amount of profanity. No "dagnabbit" or "gol-durn-it" from these down to Earth characters.
My one complaint is the author's lack of variety in describing the drugs as they are simply "product" all the way through. Not "the product," not any number of other terms such as stuff, meth, rocks, etc. "Product" sounds too much like something in a Silicon Valley financial statement.
I'm looking forward to read more of Porter's adventures. I recommend this book to all who love a good page-turner thriller.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2022Excellent and fast-paced thriller as the first one in Porter series was. This story is cast in North Carolina and deals with a little girl (daughter of an FBI agent) being held hostage by a group of Meth drug producers dealing with a Mexican Cartel. Porter manages to rescue the 13-year old girl. Quite a bit of surprise in who was involved in al the drug-related issues happening in the little town. Can’t wait to read the third book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
My 1st taste of Porter & I am well & truly hooked. Hunting a kidnapped girl Porter finds himself up against some seriously tough adversary's but in his own unique way he gets the job done. This is the 1st full on action, thriller that has made me laugh, cringe & cheer all in the space of a few pages. Have added the rest of the series to my wish list. Well worth a read.
