How to raise your Profile

By Vicky Clapham

A great way of marketing your business is getting yourself out there and using your own profile to draw attention to your brand. Having an amazing product or service means nothing if no one knows about it and as uncomfortable as it might seem initially, raising your own profile not only helps you to establish authority in your chosen field but boosts the visibility of your business.

There are small, simple ways to start to raise your profile to market your business without becoming the new big social media influencer or TV personality! Although if that’s your aim, we’re here for that! 😉

Here are a few opportunities to start raising your profile:

1)    Networking

One of the easiest things to do is physically meet and talk to people! Attending networking events relevant to your business and target market is a great way to get talking to people and sharing your expertise, services and products. Don’t go straight for a hard sell, form genuine connections, ask questions, make introductions and build on these over time (and don’t forget your (digital) business cards). Yorkshire Businesswoman host regular events, and the Business Wellbeing Club is also a great place to meet business owners.

2)    Show up on social media

Another way to raise your profile is to be more visible on social media. People buy from people. Showing your face and speaking on social media with video content, reels, photos to give an insight into your passion, expertise, and values can really connect with your customers. Start by recording you sharing tips to help your customer or photo of you at work or posting regularly to LinkedIn.

3)    Share your knowledge

Building your reputation as an expert in your field is a great way to establish trust and raise your profile. Speaking at events relevant to your target market and writing guest blogs for a complementary business is ideal for building your credibility. Sharing what you know demonstrates your expertise and reminds people that you are the go-to person in your field.

4)    Media requests

Responding to media requests from journalists often means free media coverage and a great way of achieving PR when you don’t have a press release or news announcement to share with the media. Check out #Journorequest on Twitter or the Lightbulb Entrepreneurs group on Facebook to see the daily requests that come through. Being featured in magazines and newspapers, especially those favoured by your target market adds to your credibility and increases your business’s exposure.

5)    Awards

Entering awards with categories synonymous with your brand and values can be great at driving PR to you and your business. Winning or being nominated for awards is a strong indicator of trust for prospective clients and customers and helps to raise your profile in your field. It sets you apart from others doing the same as you. Check out Awards Finder to find relevant awards in your sector.

Taking the first steps to raise your profile

Putting your head above the parapet and drawing attention to yourself can be hard and uncomfortable but you are your brands biggest advocate. Your passion and purpose for your business and unique understanding of the pain points of your target audience is priceless! Start small, perhaps with a short video on social media and attending a networking event and don’t feel you have to do everything at once.
