Skills-based organizations: transitioning from jobs to skills

Skills-based organizations are the ones that place skills and human capabilities at the heart of talent strategies, creating a new operating model for work and the workforce. In anticipation of the future, more and more organizations are leaving behind the traditional job-focus mentality and instead shifting to a skills-based approach.

Nestor: Reinvention and skill development in a future of work setup

Reinvention and skill development in a future of work setup

According to the World Economic Forum “Building a Common Language for Skills at Work A Global Taxonomy” Report, 50% of all employees will require reskilling by 2025, and 40% of current workers’ core skills are expected to change by 2025.

Reinvention is a future work trend that is already happening. Reinvention means we will have to learn new skills, unlearn those that no longer serve us, and re-learn other skills that will sustain us in the future.

Deloitte: Podcast alert

As we are sharing our view about shifting focus to a skills-based approach, we’d like to recommend you a podcast episode we found very relevant.

Michael Griffiths, Deloitte’s lead for Workforce Development practice, discusses skills-based organizations with Julie Dervin, who has been leading a skills-based transformation at Cargill, and John Boudreau, an academic thought leader who is consistently at the leading edge of bringing talent to the strategy table.

Harvard Business Review: “You Need a Skills-Based Approach to Hiring and Developing Talent”

Harvard Business Review: You Need a Skills-Based Approach to Hiring and Developing Talent

The author of this article published in Harvard Business Review is LinkedIn’s CEO - Ryan Roslansky. He offers some practical advice on how companies can upskill and reskill their existing workforce and take a skills-based approach to hiring new employees.

“Shifting to a skills-focused approach is a viable solution to an evolving workforce dilemma. Evaluating employees and new hires based on their skill sets instead of their work history can help level the playing field — and help companies realize the talent they already have. It also makes talent pools more diverse and often makes hiring more effective.”

Ravin Jesuthasan & John Boudreau:The future of work requires the deconstruction of jobs and the reconstruction of work”

It might be exactly what we think still is not our quote. Just a blurb from the book we’d like to bring into the spotlight here “Deconstructing the future: Work without Jobs”. It’s a manifest for a new work operating system free from the traditional boundaries of work embedded in jobs and worker capabilities embedded in job holders.

Listen to John Boudreau, the author of the book “Work without Jobs” making an argument for:

  • Tasks and Projects instead of Jobs
  • Capabilities instead of Job Holders
  • Learning instead of College Degrees
