Climate KAOS Judge's Choice Award

For the past several years Kingston Artists Open Studios (KAOS) has taken part in a themed competition resulting in a series of stunning exhibitions in the Art Gallery. This year’s display ‘Climate KAOS’, opened in September, addressing the pressing theme of the Climate Emergency.

Congratulations to artist Terry Sweeney, who wins Cass Art vouchers worth £150. Dr. Paul Micklethwaite, Course Leader of the Sustainable Design MA at Kingston University, was this year’s judge. He selected ‘Man on A Tree’ by Terry Sweeney as the winning artwork, commenting:

‘I found 'Man on a Tree' the most powerful and thought-provoking work in the show. Rather than highlighting a particular symptom of our unsustainable lifestyles, such as plastic waste, it presents the existential dilemma we face in trying to decide what course of action to take in response to the increasingly evident consequences of our impact on our planet. We are all the man with the axe - as we watch the waters rise, do we trust to fate, or act without certainty that what we do will be for the best? Our pride in our civilisation has not prepared us for this ultimate moment of jeopardy.’

See the show and cast your vote for the ‘People’s Choice’ award for the most popular artwork. Votes will be counted when the display closes and we will announce the winner on social media. Check out Rachel Pearcey’s artwork ‘By 2030 it may be too late. Make a difference - one bag at a time’ which allows you to select a beautiful tote bag from a shopping trolley to keep, in return for a donation to the Museum. Also look out for the workshops and events we are running alongside the exhibition on our What's On page.
