Your Daily Dose of Neighborhood News

November 30, 2022

Hi, Block Club readers,

It’s not every day you get to see a huge photo of yourself out reporting on the South Side in The New York Times. I received that honor yesterday when I spotted myself on page five while flipping through the Times in Jewel-Osco. That’s Black girl magic! South Side magic!

The ad was placed by the Institute for Nonprofit News, which helped our fledgling newsroom tremendously when we launched. It promoted the national nonprofit news movement for Giving Tuesday, a movement that helps newsrooms like ours.

I grew up on the South Side in Ashburn. I remember taking two buses and a train to get to Whitney Young High School, where I worked on our paper, The Beacon. Not to get sappy like maple, but I always wanted to tell stories relevant to my community. I’d hear my family mention aldermanic mistakes, businesses opening, old institutions closing and everything in between and wonder, "Why isn’t anyone covering this?" But at Block Club, those are exactly the stories we're writing.

As co-founder Stephanie Lulay always says, we don’t do our work for the accolades or the recognition, but it's exciting to show the rest of the world a thriving, independent local newsroom — backed by the community — is possible.

Thank you to everyone who donated yesterday for Giving Tuesday. We are truly blown away by your support, which funds our work and  helps us keep our boots on the ground. If you didn't give, you can still make a tax-deductible donation here or subscribe (and get a free neighborhood poster) here

Stay warm out there,
