When Liverpool paraded the 2019 Champions League trophy through the city, Jurgen Klopp’s wife – Ulla – waved from her perch on a bin outside the Liver Building.

As a metaphor for their immersion into the independent spirit of a city hit over the head by generations of government condescension and almost institutional sarcasm, that image has a quiet power. The Klopps get Liverpool. They get the humour and hard resilience of the people, the instinctive mistrust of authority.
