The Rocketeer lives!

After over three years of radio silence, a new report suggests that a sequel to the Disney cult classic The Rocketeer is in development. According to Movieweb, Azia Squire is set to write the sequel, which will premiere on Disney+.

Back in 2016, Disney announced it was developing a Rocketeer sequel with an African American female lead. The film would have followed a young pilot who dons the jetpack to stop a scientist from using advanced technology to turn the tide of the Cold War. It is unclear if that storyline will be utilized in any way in the new movie.

The 1991 film was based on the indie comic book series "The Rocketeer" by Dave Stevens. Published in the 1980s, the book is a love letter to the serials of the 1930s and 1940s and told the adventures of Cliff Secord, who used his jetpack to fight gangsters, Nazis and more.

An animated series based on the cult hit premiered on Disney Channel, Disney Junior and DisneyNOW back in November. The children's series follows a seven-year-old aspiring pilot who takes on the mantle of the Rocketeer and protects her town from danger.
